Jack Thorne’s smash-hit National Theatre and West End drama The Motive and the Cue is set to transfer to Broadway.
The play will open in one of The Shubert Organization’s theatres in New York in Spring 2025.
The Motive and the Cue’s original lead performers, Johnny Flynn as Richard Burton, Mark Gatiss as John Gielgud and Tuppence Middleton as Elizabeth Taylor, will all transfer with the production, with further casting to be announced.
Mark Gatiss won a 2024 Olivier Award for his performance as actor John Gielgud in the production, which scored impressive reviews from the London critics for both its National Theatre and Noel Coward Theatre runs.
Directed by Sam Mendes (Skyfall, The Hills of California), the play by Jack Thorne (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) is inspired by the making of Burton and Gielgud’s infamous production of Hamlet on Broadway.

The creative team for the show includes set designer Es Devlin; costume designer, Katrina Lindsay; lighting designer, Jon Clark; composer, Benjamin Kwasi Burrell; and sound designer, Paul Arditti
The transfer will be co-produced by Sam Mendes’ Neal Street Productions (The Lehman Trilogy, Hamnet).

It was also recently announced that Sam Mendes’ production of Jez Butterworth’s new play The Hills of California will transfer to Broadway’s Broadhurst Theatre, with performances starting on 11 September 2024, produced by Neal Street and the producer of the recent London run of the show at the Harold Pinter Theatre, Sonia Friedman.
In other Sam Mendes news, it was announced today that his acclaimed, award-winning production of The Lehman Trilogy will return to the West End’s Gillian Lynne Theatre this autumn.
The play has proved a huge hit in London, New York and on tour, and will run again at the Gillian Lynne in London from 24 September 2024.
