The Curve theatre in Leicester has announced that it will produce the UK premiere of hit Australian musical Muriel’s Wedding in 2025.
Muriel’s Wedding The Musical will play the Curve, Leicester from 10 April to 10 May 2025. The show is also widely tipped for a West End run.
The show is a collaboration between Made at Curve and the show’s Australian producers Global Creatures (Moulin Rouge! The Musical, Strictly Ballroom The Musical). The production is also in association with Sydney Theatre Company.
Muriel’s Wedding is to be directed by the Simon Phillips, who directed the Australian world premiere production. Phillips also directed mega-hit Aussie musical Priscilla Queen of the Desert, also based on a much-loved Australian movie, and recently directed the new theatre-dinner version of the show – Priscilla The Party in London.
Choreography will be by Andrew Hallsworth, who again choreographed the Aussie version of the show.
The show has been rumoured to be coming to the UK for a number of years. In January this year the composer of Muriel’s Wedding The Musical, Australian singer-songwriter Kate Miller-Heidke, said in an interview in the Sydney Morning Herald that there were plans for a UK tour of the show, before it comes to the West End.
Muriel’s Wedding The Musical played the Lyric Theatre in Sydney in 2017, proving a huge hit with audiences and winning five Helpmann Awards – the Australian equivalent of the Oliviers, and 7 Sydney Theatre Awards. The show came back in 2019 with a successful Australian tour.
The show boasts a book by PJ Hogan, who wrote and directed the original movie version, with songs by music and lyrics by Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall, and songs by Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and Stig Anderson originally written for ABBA.

Australian musicals are gaining lots of traction at the moment, including acclaimed musical FANGIRLS by Yve Blake, which has taken Australia by storm and is coming to London’s Lyric Hammersmith Theatre this Summer, from 13 July.
Muriel’s Wedding The Musical is about Muriel Heslop: stuck in a dead-end life in Porpoise Spit, Muriel dreams of the perfect wedding – the white dress, the church, the attention. Unfortunately, there’s one thing missing. A groom. Following her dreams to Sydney, Muriel ends up with everything she ever wanted – a man, a fortune and a million Twitter followers. That’s when things start to go really wrong.
