New musical Lady M, based on Shakespeare’s Macbeth but from the perspective of Lady Macbeth, is set for a full staging in China.

This China-produced production of an original English-language musical is presented by Shanghai Culture Square and Xujun Drama & Musical.

Lady M is composed by James Beeny and Gina Georgio, and has held a number of workshops and presentations in the UK, including a 2022 workshop featuring Kerry Ellis, George Blagden, Jamie Muscato, Maiya Quansah-Breed and Karl Queensborough.

West End star Karl Queensborough (Hamilton) is now set to star in the China production, playing Macbeth, alongside British actor Richard Carson (Les Miserables, Joseph) as Macduff.

The part of Lady Macbeth will be shared by Maya Hakvoort and Li-Tong Hsu from the Netherlands, and Miao Mengchu from China.

This musical reimagining of Macbeth tells the untold story of Lady Macbeth, whose haunted past lies at the heart of this infamous tale of murder, power and destruction.

The director, Xu Jun, said in a statement: “In an era of war and turmoil, Shakespeare dug deeply into the human heart and nature under a disordered and uneasy social atmosphere. This is an everlasting classic, and what we need to do is to explore its meaning for the modern world. Lady Macbeth is a mysterious and complicated character. The performance will be staged in an immersive theater rather than on a traditional framed stage. If you watch ‘Lady M’ from different angles, you can observe her different inner sides.”

The show’s literary consultant is Shakespeare expert Shi Zhikang, a retired professor from the Shanghai International Studies University.

The musical premieres at MIFA 1862 in Shanghai China on 9 May, playing to 2 June 2024.
