Tony Award winner Sam Gold is to direct a new production of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet on Broadway this autumn 2024.
The production, titled Romeo + Juliet will feature Heartstopper star Kit Connor (Rocketman), who will make his Broadway debut as Romeo, and Golden Globe winner Rachel Zegler (West Side Story, Snow White) as Juliet.
Romeo + Juliet will start performances on 26 September 2024, playing for 16 weeks at the Circle in the Square Theatre in New York.

Romeo + Juliet will feature original music by multi Grammy Award winner Jack Antonoff of the Bleachers. Other creatives joining Sam Gold (An Enemy of the People, Fun Home, A Doll’s House Part 2) in the creative team include movement by Sonya Tayeh, and casting by Taylor Williams.
The New York venue for the show is to be announced.
Director Sam Gold said in a statement: “With the presidential election coming up in November, I felt like making a show this fall that celebrates youth and hope, and unleashes the anger young people feel about the world they are inheriting.”
The production is billed as: “The youth are f**ked. Left to their own devices in their parents’ world of violent ends, an impulsive pair of star-crossed lovers hurtle towards their inescapable fate. The intoxicating high of passion quickly descends into a brutal chaos that can only end one way.”
The announcement comes following a new London production of Romeo and Juliet directed by Jamie Lloyd, that stars Tom Holland and Francesca Amewudah-Rivers. Lloyd’s production is currently playing at the Duke of York’s Theatre in London until 3 August 2024.
Lead producer of Romeo + Juliet is Seaview, who also produced Sam Gold’s current Broadway hit An Enemy of the People at the Circle in the Square Theatre starring Succession’s Jeremy Strong.
