Award-winning actor Danny Sapani is set to lead the cast of the UK premiere of Stephen Adly Guirgis’s play Between Riverside and Crazy at Hampstead Theatre.
Directed by outgoing Donmar Warehouse artistic director Michael Longhurst, Between Riverside and Crazy is playing at Hampstead Theatre from 3 May 2024.
Danny Sapani, who recently starred in King Lear at the Almeida Theatre, plays Walter ‘Pops’ Washington in Adly Guirgis’ fast-moving Rabelaisian tragicomedy , which was a Broadway hit and won multiple awards, including the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
Sapani’s other credits stage credits include Hymn at the Almeida, and Medea at the National Theatre. On screen, Danny is best known for Killing Eve, Penny Dreadful and Halo.
The cast of Between Riverside and Crazy also features Derry Girls star Judith Roddy (Translations) as Detective Audrey O’Connor, Bridgerton’s Martins Imhangbe (Death of a Salesman) as Junior, and Muriel’s Wedding star Daniel Lapaine (Retrograde) as Lieutenant Dave Caro.
The cast also includes Ayesha Antoine (Out West) as Church Lady, Tiffany Gray as Lulu, and Sebastian Orozco (Clyde’s) as Oswaldo.
Stephen Adly Guirgis’s other plays include Jesus Hopped the A-Train, The Last Days of Judas Iscariot and The Motherf**ker with the Hat.
Michael Longhurst returns to Hampstead following his acclaimed production of Caroline or Change, and Gloria and The Blackest Black. His new production of Next to Normal at the Donmar Warehouse is transferring into the West End this summer, playing the Wyndham’s Theatre from June 2024.
Joining Michael Longhurst in the creative team of Between Riverside and Crazy are designer Max Jones, lighting designer Anna Watson, sound designer and composer Richard Hammarton, and casting director Lotte Hines.
Between Riverside and Crazy is running at Hampstead Theatre from 3 May to 15 June.
