Theatre Royal Bath has revealed its new season for 2024, including a number of home-grown shows for its Ustinov Studio, and visits by some major touring shows.
New tours heading to Bath include Bill Kenwright Ltd’s production of hit West End and Broadway show Ghost The Musical, based on the Oscar-winning movie starring Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg.
The show features music by The Eurythmics’s Dave Stewart, and the classic song ‘Unchained Melody’ by The Righteous Brothers, and will play at Theatre Royal Bath from 19 to 23 November 2024.
Already announced is the 20th anniversary revival of Alan Bennett’s acclaimed play The History Boys, which starts its UK tour at Theatre Royal Bath, playing from 22 to 31 August 2024.
Directed by Seán Linnen, Alan Bennett’s modern classic is set against the backdrop of A-Level results day at Cutler’s Grammar School in 1980s Sheffield, and delves into the lives of eight spirited teenagers who aspire to secure spots at Oxford and Cambridge universities.
The Ustinov Studio in Bath
A new season of exciting work from Deborah Warner, artistic director of Theatre Royal Bath’s Ustinov Studio, is also scheduled for 2024.
In June and September, Deborah Warner will direct Winterreise, featuring internationally acclaimed tenor Ian Bostridge, in Franz Schubert’s powerful song cycle.
Winterreise will play on 4, 5, 10, 11, 12 and 13 June, and 8 to 10 September 2024.
Olivier-award-winning theatre and opera director Richard Jones is back in Bath this season, following the success of his production of Sophie Treadwell’s Machinal, which is transferring to The Old Vic in London from 11 April to 1 June 2024.
Jones will direct a new revival of Harold Pinter’s classic comedy of menace The Birthday Party.
First performed in 1958, this celebrated modern classic remains one of his most performed plays. The Birthday Party will play the Ustinov Studio from 2 to 31 August 2024.
Currently playing at Theatre Royal Bath’s Ustinov Studio is Lindsay Posner’s revival of Arthur Miller’s A View from the Bridge starring Dominic West (The Wire, The Crown, The Affair), Kate Fleetwood and Callum Scott Howells. Photos also dropped today of this new production.
The sold-out run at the Ustinov Studio is playing to 16 March 2024, before A View From the Bridge then transfers to London’s Theatre Royal Haymarket, from 23 May to 3 August 2024.
Theatre Royal Bath drama revivals: Accolade, Filumena & Suite in Three Keys
July will see the transfer to Bath from the Theatre Royal Windsor of classic dramas Accolade and Filumena, both directed by Sean Mathias (Frank & Percy).
Written by Emlyn Williams (The Corn is Green), Accolade is a play is about a celebrated writer whose web of deception and dark desires start to unravel his carefully constructed life, and plays in Bath from 2 to 6 July 2024.
Filuema is a classic Italian comedy by Eduardo De Filippo, in an English version by Keith Waterhouse and Willis Hall, and plays from 12 to 16 November 2024.
Both Accolade and Filumena will also run on tour, starting at Windsor Theatre Royal and also visiting the Guildford Yvonne Arnaud Theatre and London’s Richmond Theatre – see their show pages for booking details.
Also in July, and as a neat companion piece to Accolade, the Orange Tree Theatre in Richmond’s revival of Noel Coward’s Suite in Three Keys – A Song at Twilight comes to Bath, from 9 to 13 July 2024, with a cast including Stephen Boxer, Emma Fielding and Tara Fitzgerald.
Directed by the Orange Tree’s Tom Littler, A Song at Twilight is Noel Coward’s full-length play about a famous and married elderly writer, reputedly based on Somerset Maugham, who faces blackmail at the hands of a male ex-lover threatening to expose his secret past.

Other big shows travelling to the Theatre Royal Bath include the UK tours of Heathers The Musical, also from Bill Kenwright Ltd, which plays from 30 July to 3 August 2024; hilarious new comedy musical Here You Come Again written by Jonathan Harvey (Beautiful Thing) and featuring Dolly Parton’s biggest hits, which plays from 5 to 9 November 2024; and Sebastian Faulks’s epic story of love and loss in the First World War, Birdsong, from 25 to 30 November 2024.
