Stage and screen star Vanessa Williams is set to play Miranda Priestly in the new musical adaptation of hit movie The Devil Wears Prada, coming to the West End’s Dominion Theatre in 2024.
The Devil Wears Prada opens at the Dominion Theatre in London in October 2024.
Vanessa Williams is best known for playing Wilhelmina Slater in smash-hit TV series Ugly Betty. The stage and screen actor, model and recording artist made her West End theatre debut in 2019 in the Donmar Warehouse production of musical City of Angels, at the Garrick Theatre.
Vanessa said in a short statement: “Bringing Miranda Priestly to life in the West End is an absolute dream come true. Gird your loins, folks.”
Vanessa’s character in the musical, Miranda Priestley, played by Meryl Streep in the hit movie, is a tough-talking fashion magazine editor and titan of the fashion industry, close in character to Vanessa Williams’ role as Wilhelmina in Ugly Betty.
The Devil Wears Prada has music by Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award-winner Elton John (Disney’s The Lion King), lyrics by singer-songwriter Shaina Taub, and a book by Kate Wetherhead (Submissions Only).
Multi-Tony Award winning Broadway and West End director Jerry Mitchell (Legally Blonde, Pretty Woman, Kinky Boots) will direct and choreograph this huge new West End show.
Joining Jerry Mitchell in the creative team are set design by Tim Hatley, costume design by Gregg Barnes, lighting design by Bruno Poet, sound design by Gareth Owen, and casting by Jill Green CDG.
The show is based on Lauren Weisberger’s best-selling novel and the much-loved 2006 movie starring Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly, a titan of the fashion industry and editor in chief of fashion magazine Runway, with Anne Hathaway as Andrea “Andy” Sachs, a graduate who goes to New York City and lands a job as Priestly’s co-assistant, plus Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci in star turns as co-assistant Emily Charlton and art director Nigel Kipling.
This UK show is produced by Tony Award winner Kevin McCollum/ Alchemation (In the Heights, Avenue Q, Rent, SIX and Mrs. Doubtfire), Rocket Entertainment / David Furnish (Tammy Faye, Billy Elliot: The Musical), and Jamie Wilson (Mrs Doubtfire, Sister Act The Musical, Ain’t Too Proud) and presented by special arrangement with Buena Vista Theatrical.
The Devil Wears Prada is getting an out-of-town try-out before heading to the Dominion Theatre, with an exclusive preview run at the Theatre Royal Plymouth from 9 July 2024.
Currently playing at the Dominion Theatre is The King & I until 2 March 2024, followed by Sister Act The Musical starring Beverley Knight and Ruth Jones 15 March to 31 August 2024.
Jerry Mitchell is also directing new musical Becoming Nancy at Birmingham Rep this year, and his production of Pretty Woman The Musical is currently on a big UK tour.
The Devil Wears Prada will run from 24 October 2024 at the Dominion Theatre in London.
