The winners have been announced for this year’s The Stage Awards 2024.

The annual awards celebrate theatrical achievements in West End, regional and fringe theatre in the UK and beyond, and were announced today, 29 January 2024, at a ceremony at Theatre Royal Drury Lane in London.

The awards were hosted by actors Isobel Thom (I, Joan) and Elan Davies (Imrie), who both won the Best Performer in a Play award at last year’s The Stage Debut Awards.

Performances during the awards included Jessica Lee singing ‘Borrowed Time’ from Death Note The Musical.

In terms of theatres, Theatre of the Year went to two venues – the National Theatre in London, and the Watermill Theatre in Newbury; Fringe Theatre of the Year to the Little Angel Theatre in London; Theatre Building of the Year to Roundhouse Works in London; and International Award to Battersea Arts Centre.

Companies awarded this year included Producer of the Year to Ellie Keel Productions; Innovation Award to ZU-UK for Within Touching Distance; Digital Project of the Year to Parade-Fest and Artists on the Frontline for With Fire and Rage; and Community Project of the Year to Culture Collective.

Finally, The Stage Awards’ unsung hero award went to Chichester Festival Theatre’s Theatre Manager Janet Bakose, who has worked for the venue for 20 years; and the newly created Judges’ Award category went to Chickenshed theatre company, for 50 years of excellence.

Submissions for the awards were opened up in October 2023, and then a focus group of influential industry figures and senior writers for The Stage whittled the list down, before a shortlist, and then the winners, were decided by a judging panel that consisted of Baz Bamigboye, entertainment columnist and international editor for Deadline; David Benedict, columnist, The Stage and critic, Variety; Lyn Gardner, associate editor, The Stage; Matthew Hemley, news editor, The Stage; Sam Marlowe, reviews editor, The Stage; Amanda Parker, columnist, The Stage, and arts consultant; Georgia Snow, chief reporter, The Stage; and lead judge, Alistair Smith, editor of The Stage).
