The smash-hit stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has bounced back from Covid to deliver record theatre profits.
The show, which is a long-runner in London’s West End and New York’s Broadway, saw the Harry Potter franchise make £8.25 million in the last 12 months through HPTP Holdings company, which manages the theatrical interests of the author.
HPTP Holidays said that ticket sales for the show in London, playing at the Palace Theatre and produced by Sonia Friedman Productions and Colin Callender’s Playground Entertainment had returned to pre-pandemic levels.
The Broadway production of the show, which is playing at the Lyric Theatre, has also moved into profit.
First reported in Deadline, overall revenues at HPTP Holdings were £14 million from April 2022 to the end of March 2023, which is a 300% increase on the 2021-2022 year, with pre-tax profits of £5.7 million, up from £1.1 million from the previous year.
HPTP is private limited company managed by Neil Blair.
The most revenues were generated from the European productions of the show, primarily London, at £5.3 million, with a further £4.6 million from the US including Broadway, and £4.1 million from the rest of the world, including the long-running production in Australia which finished its run in Melbourne in July 2023.
In April 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery announced that they have commissioned a new Harry Potter TV series, with each season of the show based on one of the books in the franchise.
There are rumours that a TV or movie version of the stage play could also be in the works.
