The producers of Cabaret on Broadway have announced another cast member to join Eddie Redmayne and Gayle Rankin at the August Wilson Theatre.
Rebecca Frecknall’s smash-hit production opens on Broadway in spring 2024, and as in London, the August Wilson Theatre is getting a massive reno to transform it into the Kit Kat Club, courtesy of designer Tom Scutt.
Joining Eddie Redmayne as The Emcee and Gayle Rankin as Sally Bowles will be Tony Award nominee Ato Blankson-Wood (Slave Play), playing Cliff. Further casting is to be announced.
Ato Blankson-Wood’s previous stage credits include playing Hamlet at Shakespeare in the Park, plus Twelfth Night, As You Like It, and Hair at the venue.
His performance in Slave Play at the Off-Broadway New York Workshop in 2018 scored Ato a Tony nomination when the play transferred to Broadway’s John Golden Theatre.
Ato Blankson-Wood told Deadline that: “I am beyond excited to return to Broadway in Rebecca Frecknall’s brilliant production of Cabaret. I recognize the weight and responsibility of telling this particular story at this particular moment and am emboldened by the fact that I’ll get to do it alongside Eddie Redmayne and Gayle Rankin, two actors whom I admire so deeply. Cliff, like me, is an artist attempting to create and make sense of the world against a backdrop of escalating violence and hatred. I look forward to learning what he has to teach me.”
Producers of the show are Ambassador Theatre Group Productions (Ambassador Theatre Group own the August Wilson Theatre), Underbelly, Gavin Kalin Productions, Hunter Arnold, Smith & Brant Theatricals, and Wessex Grove.
Redmayne and Rankin are scheduled to play a limited run through to 31 August 2024 in the Broadway production, and from Monday 17 June Redmayne will not perform on Monday evenings and Rankin will not perform at Wednesday matinees.
London’s production of Cabaret continues to go from strength-to-strength, and is now booking to 28 September 2024. The show currently stars Jake Shears from the Scissor Sisters as The Emcee, Rebecca Lucy Taylor aka Self Esteem as Sally Bowles, and Nathan Ives-Moiba as Cliff. Shears and Taylor recently extended their run in the show for one more week, to 27 January 2024.
Cabaret is running from 1 April 2024 at the August Wilson Theatre in New York
