Broadway musical comedy Shucked has announced it is to close at the Nederlander Theater in New York.

The show will finish up on 14 January 2024, after 28 preview performances and 327 regular performances, having started its run on 8 March 2023.

The producers of the show have not ruled out moving to another Broadway venue, although the spring season is looking very full and space in another Broadway theatre will be tight.

Shucked is closing despite running at 85% capacity and grossing around $750,000 a week. The Nederlander Theatre, owned by the Nederlander Organization which also owns London’s Aldwych Theatre, Dominion Theatre, and a share of the Adelphi Theatre, has their eyes on a new show for the venue to bring in more revenues.

The country music musical is produced by Mike Bosner and Jason Owen amongst others. They have said that the show is still on track to come to London’s West End – in a Delfont Mackintosh venue – in winter 2025. A Sydney production with producer Suzanne Jones is also planned for spring 2026.

Shucked will also start a North American tour next autumn.

The show has songs by Nashville-based composers Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally, with a book by Robert Horn, and direction by Jack O’Brien.

The current cast of Shucked stars John Behlmann, Kevin Cahoon, Andrew Durand, Grey Henson, Ashley D. Kelley, Isabelle McCalla, and Alex Newell, who won a Tony Award for their performance in the show.

The New York Times has speculated that a revival of The Who’s Tommy, which recently did great business in Chicago, may be a contender to take its place at the Nederlander.
