Sondheim’s Follies to return to West End?

Exciting news for Sondheim fans. Trevor Nunn is taking over as artistic director of the Theatre Royal Haymarket, and one of the mooted productions for his first season is a revival of classic musical Follies.

Follies was last seen in a West End venue in 2002 in a concert production staged at the Royal Festival Hall. But it is not since Cameron Mackintosh’s Mike Ockrent production at the Shaftesbury Theatre in 1987 that the show has seen a significant production in London.

Other shows in Nunn’s first season at the West End venue include Sienna Miller in Terence Rattigan’s Flare Path in March, and speculation that Nunn will also include one of Shakespeare’s later plays and an early Tom Stoppard in the repertoire.

  • Show: Follies
  • Theatre: Theatre Royal Haymarket
  • Casting: TBC
  • Director: Trevor Nunn?
  • Previously staged in the West End:  Shaftesbury Theatre (1987)
  • Opening: 2011?

  1. My fantasy casting for this would be Imelda Staunton as Sally, Douglas Hodge as Ben, Kim Cattrall as Phyllis and Clive Rowe as Buddy.
Or maybe if you were casting older then Elaine P as Sally but i’d struggle to come up with the other three.
Also Trevor’s gotta bring back Maureen Lipman and Sian Phillips for a turn!

  2. I don’t think this show is “muted” to happen. Rather, “mooted”, methinks. A command of English is required on a site of this nature, no?

    1. Marjorie- SACK THE PROOF READER! Thank you for spotting this deliberate mistake Wendy!!!! We like to keep you on your spelling toes whilst also blinding you with showbiz glamour! Cheers, Ed
