2:22 A Ghost Story to move to the Apollo Theatre
Hit supernatural thriller 2:22 A Ghost Story is jumping West End theatres again, this time staying on Shaftesbury Avenue and moving next door, from the Lyric Theatre to the Apollo Theatre. The show will have an 18 week season at the Apollo, running from 14 May to 17 September 2023. It means that the show will have moved five times around the West End, premiering at the Noel Coward Theatre in Summer 2021 before moving to the Gielgud Theatre and then the Criterion, before its current run at the Lyric Theatre starring Cheryl, Jake Wood, Louise Ford and Scott Karim. Cheryl and co end their run on 23 April at the Lyric Theatre, and the new cast for the Apollo Theatre will be announced soon. Cheryl got great reviews for her West End stage premiere in the show earlier this month. Previous casts include Lily Allen, Julia Chan, Hadley Fraser and Jake Wood (Noel Coward Theatre), Stephanie Beatriz, James Buckley, Elliot Cowan and Giovanna Fletcher (Gielgud Theatre), Tom Felton, Mandip Gill, Sam Swainsbury and Beatriz Romilly (Criterion Theatre), and then for its second season at the Criterion, Laura Whitmore, Matt Willis, Felix Scott and Tamsin Carroll. 2:22 A Ghost Story is written by award-winning writer Danny Robins (The Battersea Poltergeist), and is directed by Matthew Dunster (Shirley Valentine). The wider creative team includes set design by Anna Fleischle, costume design by Cindy Lin, lighting design by Lucy Carter, sound by Ian Dickinson for Autograph Sound, illusions by Chris Fisher, casting by Matilda James CDG and co-direction by Gabriel Vega Weissman. Writer Danny Robins said in a press statement: "We’re on the move again! This time next door! It blows my mind that we have been on this incredible journey of what is now a record breaking 5 transfers and 6 seasons! I'm just delighted to see the continued appetite for my play. The amazing audience reactions, coupled with one outstanding cast after another, have catapulted it into bonafide long-runner territory and I can’t wait to see who'll pick up the mantle in this next iteration. Watch this space and prepare to be deeply spooked!" In the play, Jenny believes her new home is haunted, but her husband Sam isn’t having any of it. They argue with their first dinner guests, old friend Lauren and new partner Ben. Can the dead really walk again? Belief and scepticism clash, but something feels strange and frightening, and that something is getting closer, so they’re going to stay up… until 2:22… and then they’ll know. Currently playing at the Apollo Theatre in London is For Black Boys Who Considered Suicide When The Hue Gets Too Heavy, until 7 May 2023. Following 2:22 A Ghost Story at the Apollo, The Time Traveller’s Wife will run from 7 October 2023. Jake Wood replaces Hugo Chegwin in 2:22 A Ghost Story starring Cheryl
Producers of 2:22 A Ghost Story at the Lyric Theatre in the West End have announced a cast change for the show. Hugo Chegwin (People Just Do Nothing), son of late TV presenter Keith Chegwin, had been scheduled to play the role of Ben, but has had to pull out of the run due to illness during the rehearsal period. Chegwin will be replaced by Jake Wood (EastEnders), from 26 January until the end of the run. Wood reprises the role of Ben, for which he won a WhatsOnStage Award for Best Supporting Actor. The cast also features pop star and former Girls Aloud band member and The X Factor judge Cheryl, plus Scott Karim (The Invisible Hand) and Louise Ford (Crashing, The Windsors). Jake Wood was in the original cast of 2:22 A Ghost Story when it opened in 2021 at the Noel Coward Theatre also starring Lily Allen, Julia Chan and Hadley Fraser. The producers of the show said in a statement: "Due to illness during the rehearsal period, Hugo Chegwin has sadly had to withdraw from the production. We are delighted to welcome Jake Wood back to the 2:22 family." Jake Wood said: "It was an honour to originate the role of Ben at the Noel Coward, winning the What's On Stage best supporting performer in a male identifying role in a play Award for 2021, and I am so excited to be rejoining the cast until the end of April. Danny Robins' script is funny, touching, and so entertaining and easily the best play I have ever read. If you've seen the show before, come back and see it again and I promise that you will enjoy it just as much as I know I will the second time around." Hugo Chegwin said: "I've had the flu. Due to being poorly during the rehearsal period, I've had to pull out of the play. I'm absolutely gutted about this and I wish everyone involved in the play the best of luck. The cast are truly amazing." Written by Danny Robins with direction by Matthew Dunster, the supernatural thriller has set designs by Anna Fleischle, costume design by Cindy Lin, lighting design by Lucy Carter, sound by Ian Dickinson for Autograph Sound, casting by Jessica Ronane CDG and illusions by Chris Fisher, co-direction by Isabel Marr. 2:22 A Ghost Story is booking at the Lyric Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue until 23 April 2023. My aim, writing the play, was to create a fun, spooky, thought-provoking night out, a show that leaves you buzzing, on the edge of your seat, questioning what you believe.
