A musical stage adaptation of The Queen’s Gambit is in development by US entertainment company Level Forward, the team behind the Alanis Morissette musical Jagged Little Pill.
Level Forward acquired the theatrical stage rights to Walter Tevis’ 1983 novel following the hugely successful award winning Netflix adaptation.
The Netflix adaptation, starring Anya Taylor-Joy, has received two Golden Globe Awards, two Critics’ Choice Awards and became Netflix’s most-watched scripted miniseries with over 62 million viewers in its first month.
The story follows Beth Harmon’s journey and triumph from an orphanage in Kentucky to Paris to Moscow and beyond, chronicling the chess prodigy’s struggle to overcome her past, her addictions, all set in a male dominated world.
Level Forward CEO Adrienne Becker and producer Julia Dunetz, who will produce the musical, said: “It is a privilege for Level Forward to lead the charge of bringing The Queen’s Gambit to the stage through the beloved and enduring craft of musical theater.“
She added “Told through a brave and fresh point of view, audiences are already sharing in the friendship and fortitude of the story’s inspiring women who energize and sustain Beth Harmon’s journey and ultimate triumph. The story is a siren call amidst our contemporary struggles for gender and racial equity, and we’re looking forward to moving the project forward.”
A release date, creative team and more for the show are to be revealed. The musical is expected to open on Broadway and then transfer to to London.
