Broadway Theatre to remain closed until May 2021

In another blow to the theatre industry, Broadway theatres will remain closed until at least 30 May 2021, the Broadway League confirmed today.

America’s most iconic theatre industry has been closed since 12 March 2020 due to to unfolding covid-19 pandemic.  The Broadway League initially cancelled performances for 4-weeks, however this has repeatedly been extended to 7 June 2020,  January 2021 and now 30 May 2021 at the earliest.

All tickets sales for Broadway performances through 30 May 2021 have been suspended, and those with tickets should contact their point of purchase for exchanges and refunds..

Dates for each returning show and new Broadway productions will be announced as individual productions determine the performance schedules for their respective shows.

“With nearly 97,000 workers who rely on Broadway for their livelihood and an annual economic impact of $14.8 billion to the city, our membership is committed to re-opening as soon as conditions permit us to do so. We are working tirelessly with multiple partners on sustaining the industry once we raise our curtains again,” said Charlotte St. Martin, President of the Broadway League.

Early indications from Producers are that many shows will not return.  Disney have already confirmed Frozen will not reopen. When Broadway shutdown in March there were 31 productions running, including 8 in previews and 8 in rehearsal.

Further details to come.
