2020 Tony Awards to take place online

The 2020 Tony Awards are to take place online, it has been confirmed.

American theatres’ most prestigious awards ceremony will go ahead this year in an online only presentation.

The 2020 Tony Awards ceremony will be presented without a live audience, with eligibility, an event date and further details to be announced.

Charlotte St Martin, President of the Broadway League, and Heather Hitchens, President and CEO of the American Theatre Wing said

“Though unprecedented events cut the Broadway season short, it was a year full of extraordinary work that deserves to be recognized .. We are thrilled not only to have found a way to properly celebrate our artists’ incredible achievements this season, but also to be able to uplift the entire theatre community and show the world what makes our Broadway family so special at this difficult time. The show must go on, no matter what and it will”.

The Awards are conventionally held in June at Radio City Music Hall but were delayed this year due to the ongoing covid-19 pandemic. The ceremony itself is a highlight of the theatre calendar with lavish tongue-in-cheek song and dance numbers as well as an opportunity to showcase some of the top musical’s to the televised audience. Last year the ceremony was hosted by James Corden.

2020 would have been a significant year for UK productions transferring to Broadway with Six The Musical only hours away from making its premiere, Marianne Elliot’s production of Sondheim’s Company in previews and Michael Longhurst’s production of Caroline, Or Change with Sharon. D Clarke due to open.
