Divergent star Theo James is the latest actor to join the forthcoming West End transfer of City Of Angels at the Garrick Theatre in London.
Josie Rourke’s production has an expanding starry cast including American actress Vanessa Williams (Ugly Betty, Desperate Housewives) and former Girls Aloud singer Nicola Roberts in her theatrical stage debut.
West End favourites Hadley Fraser (The Winter’s Tale, Young Frankenstein), Rosalie Craig (Company) and Rebecca Trehearn (Showboat) will reprise their leading roles from the Donmar Warehouse run with Jonathan Slinger (Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, Urine Town) also joining the cast.
Theo James will play ‘Stone’ the better looking, stronger, more powerful imaginary counterpart to Hadley Fraser’s ‘Stine’.
Whilst James is best know for his film and tv work, the Bristol Old Vic graduate’s stage credits include Sex with Strangers alongside Emilia Fox (Silent Witness) at Hampstead Theatre and Closer at Nottingham New Theatre.
Rounding out the cast are Marc Elliott, Nick Cavaliere, Adam Fogarty, Mark Penfold, Rob Houchen, Joshua St Clair, Cindy Bellot, Sadie-Jean Shirley, Manuel Pacific and Ryan Reid.
Josie Rourke’s “ingenious, stupendous revival” (The Telegraph) premiered in 2014, when it was hailed as “a blissful evening” (The Stage) that’s “smart, seductive and very funny” (Evening Standard).
With a swinging score by Cy Coleman and David Zippel and a witty book by Larry Gelbart, the show is described as a love letter to the glamorous world of old Hollywood and film noir. The show is centred on Hadley Fraser’s character, a crime novelist called Stine, who is turning his novel into a film where the people he imagines for celluloid appear in monochrome.
The creative team includes design by Robert Jones, lighting by Howard Harrison, musical direction by Gareth Valentine, choreography by Stephen Mear, and sound design by Terry Jardine and Nick Lidster for Autograph.
City of Angels is booking from 7 March 2020 until 5 September 202 at the Garrick Theatre, London.
