Katori Hall’s acclaimed play Our Lady of Kibeho will receive its UK premiere at Royal & Derngate Northampton in 2019.
Directed by the venue’s Artistic Director James Dacre, the cast is led by Gabrielle Brooks (Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, West End; Twelfth Night, Young Vic; The Way of the World, Donmar Warehouse) as schoolgirl Alphonsine, Michelle Asante (Ruined, Almeida; Welcome Home, Captain Fox, Donmar Warehouse) as Sister Evangelique and Ery Nzaramba (The Prisoner, National Theatre; Battlefield, Young Vic; The Suit,Young Vic) as Father Tuyishime.
Presenting a haunting insight into the true events that captured the world’s attention, the play is set in 91981 in Rwanda, where a schoolgirl Alphonsine claims the Virgin Mary has appeared to her in the village of Kibeho, warning of impending doom for her country. Her friends ignore her, her teachers Sister Evangelique and Father Tuishime scold her, until another student sees the vision, and then another…
A spectacular meditation on faith and everyday miracles, it was hailed “the most important play of the year” by the Wall Street Journal when it premiered in New York in 2014.
The creative team includes design by 2018 Tony award nominee Jonathan Fensom, with original music by Orlando Gough, choreography by Diane Alison Mitchell, photography by Pulitzer Prize-winning war photographer Paul Watson and aerial direction by Vicki Amedume.
The cast also features Michaela Blackburn, Ibinabo Jack, Pepter Lunkuse, Michael Mears, Keenan Munn‑Francis, Yasmin Mwanza, Rima Nsubuga, Ewart James Walters and Leo Wringer.
Our Lady of Kibeho runs from 12 January 2019 until 2 February 2019, with press night on 16 January 2019 at Royal & Derngate Northampton.
