A new musical called A Sign of the Times, that features the songs of 1960s hits including those of Petula Clark, is in development in New York. The show will get a developmental reading later this month in New York from 24 to 28 October, with future plans for a full workshop and production. A Sign of the Times is the story of Cindy, to be played by Chilina Kennedy in the reading, a young woman pursuing her passion and finding her voice in New York City in 1965. A Sign of the Times - the title of one of Petula Clark's hits - includes her classic songs such as “Downtown” and “Don’t Sleep in the Subway”, plus other 1960's numbers such as “You Don’t Own Me,” “The Shoop Shoop Song (It’s In His Kiss),” and “The Boy From New York City”. The show has a new book by Lindsey Hope Perlman (Cassandra Complex), since its first outing at Connecticut’s Goodspeed Musicals in 2016. It's based on an original story by Richard Robin, and is directed by Gabriel Barre (Amazing Grace) with choreography by Cinderella and School of Rock's JoAnn M. Hunter. Music supervision and orchestrations will be by Joseph Church (The Lion King). The curtain is to come down on Disney and Cameron Mackintosh's Mary Poppins at the Prince Edward Theatre in London. The show will play its final performance on 8 January 2023. Based on the stories of P.L. Travers and the original Walt Disney film, this production of Mary Poppins opened in October 2019 and played to March 2020 when it closed due to the Covid shutdown. Post pandemic the production re-opened in August 2021 and will now play a further six-month extension into Christmas and New Year.  The West End cast is led by Zizi Strallen as Mary Poppins and Charlie Stemp, though Stemp has taken the summer off to appear in Crazy For You over in Chichester, with Louis Gaunt stepping in to play Bert. Mary Poppins continues to spread her magic around the globe, having just opened in Tokyo earlier this year and Sydney in May where it has been received wonderfully by critics and audiences alike. The West End productions of Hamilton and Mary Poppins have both announced new booking periods with additional changes to their performance schedules. Hamilton at the Victoria Palace Theatre is now booking until 17 December 2022. From 12 July 2022, the performances schedule will change to play evening performances Monday – Saturday 7.30pm, and matinee performances on Thursday and Saturday at 2.30pm. It will no longer play on Sunday. Now approaching its fifth year at the Victoria Palace Theatre, the Olivier, Tony and Grammy award-winning production remains one of London's hottest theatre tickets. Rankin also launches new PERFORMANCE book featuring photos from the exhibition Rankin, one of the most celebrated photographers in the UK, has a new photo exhibition in London - and it features the stars of West End shows. The free exhibition, titled "Performance by Rankin", opened last month at the Fujifilm House of Photography on Long Acre in Covent Garden, and continues until 30 January 2022. The exhibition celebrates the return of live theatre and musicals to London after the Covid lockdowns, and has seen Rankin join forces with the Mayor of London and the Society of London Theatre on the project. "Performance by Rankin" demonstrates the talent and resilience of our West End people - both in front of the curtain and back stage, and to celebrate the fact that London theatre is the cultural heart of our city. Over 150 portraits from nearly 60 shows are included in the exhibition featuring star actors and dancers, writers, directors, dressers, stage doorkeepers, producers, stage managers, designers, technicians, pit musicians, puppeteers, front-of-house staff and more. The exhibition is free, but visitors are encouraged to donate on site to the Theatre Artists Fund, which provides emergency aid to struggling theatre freelancers, as well as to four London youth homelessness charities selected by the Mayor of London: Depaul , akt , Centrepoint and New Horizons Youth Centre.  On 25 November Rankin also launched a new, limited edition book called PERFORMANCE that is a companion to the exhibition. A short run of copies has been printed on the Fujifilm Jet Press 750S with the remainder printed offset using Fujifilm’s Superia processless printing plates, by Emmerson Press. Cameron Mackintosh will not re-open his West End productions, including Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera, Mary Poppins and Hamilton, until 2021, he has confirmed. The mega-producer and one of the most powerful people in UK theatre said continued uncertainty about social distancing requirements had forced him to delay his shows’ return in order to ensure that his company is able to survive the crisis. Mackintosh said: "This decision is heartbreaking for me, as I am sure it is for my employees, as everyone who has worked with me over the last 50 years, on or off the stage, knows how much I care about what I do and how I do it. "Despite the government engaging with the desperate pleas from everyone in the theatre industry, so far there has been no tangible practical support beyond offers to go into debt which I don’t want to do. Their inability to say when the impossible constraints of social distancing will be lifted makes it equally impossible for us to properly plan for whatever the new future is. This has forced me to take drastic steps to ensure that I have the resources for my business to survive and enable my shows and theatres to reopen next year when we are permitted to." Once social distancing is lifted, Mackintosh said his productions would need several months of preparation in order to be remounted, as well as time for audience confidence to be rebuilt. Macktinosh added: "I have no investors or venture capital backing, everything is funded by me personally and already my companies’ considerable reserves have been massively reduced by the complete closure of our industry everywhere." "The commercial theatre provides billions of pounds of revenue to the economy. It is time this is recognised and the government takes action to ensure this priceless resource at which the British people excel is helped to survive. Without our theatres being ablaze with life, London cannot properly reopen as one of the world’s greatest cities." In light of the long-term closure of his theatres, Mackintosh companies, Cameron Mackintosh Limited and Delfont Mackintosh Theatres, have begun a consultation process for possible large scale redundancies. It was also reported that Nimax Theatres, owners of six West End theatre’s including the Apollo and Palace Theatre, have also begun the consultation process with an expectation of making over 30% of staff redundant. Andrew Lloyd Webber, who owns seven West End theatres including the London Palladium and Theatre Royal Drury Lane, has yet to announce any planned changes to when his theatres will reopen or if his companies have begun a redundancy consultation process.

Petula Clark and Joseph Millson have been cast in the West End production of Mary Poppins which opens at the Prince Edward Theatre later this year. Clark, 86 years-old,  will return to the West End stage for the first time in 22 years to play the 'Bird Woman' who sings the much-loved song 'Feed the Birds'.  The singer and actress starred as Maria von Trapp in The Sound of Music in the West End in 1981 and Candida by George Bernard Shaw in 1983.   In a career that spans eight decades, she has sold over 70-million records and become known for songs such as popular upbeat hits, including "Downtown","I Know A Place" and "My Love".  Her theatre credits also include Sunset Boulevard, Blood Brothers and Someone Like You. The production will star Zizi Strallen, who returns to play the title role following great acclaim on the recent sell-out international tour, and Charlie Stemp as Bert, who last year gave an award-winning performance as Arthur Kipps in Cameron Mackintosh’s production of Half A Sixpence and recently made his Broadway debut in Hello, Dolly!. The much-loved Olivier and Tony Award® production originally opened in the West End in December 2004, running for three years and over 1,250 performances at the Prince Edward Theatre, with the Broadway production running for over six years. Based on the wonderful stories by PL Travers and the beloved Walt Disney film, the musical is brought to the stage by a world class creative team including director Richard Eyre, with co-direction and choreography by Matthew Bourne, co-choreography by Stephen Mear and set and costume designs by Bob Crowley. Mary Poppins features a book by Academy Award®-winning screenwriter and Downton Abbey creator, Julian Fellowes and a wonderful new score by Stiles and Drewe, complementing the Sherman Brothers’ classic songs Jolly Holiday, Step in Time, Feed the Birds and Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. Disney and Cameron Mackintosh announce additional dates for the UK and Ireland tour of Mary Poppins. In addition to the previously announced dates, Mary Poppins will also play the Alhambra Theatre Bradford and Wales Millennium Centre Cardiff. Full tour schedule below. Matt Lee, one of Australia’s premier “song and dance men”, played the role of Bert in Mary Poppins in the hugely successful Australian production of the show, his portrayal winning him the prestigious Helpmann Award for Best Actor in a Musical. His other theatre credits in Australia include Miss Saigon, The Witches of Eastwick, Rent, Grease and The Boy from Oz. Matt was also a permanent member of the judging panel for Australia’s So You Think You Can Dance. Disney and Cameron Mackintosh today announced that their multi award-winning musical Mary Poppins will embark on a tour of the UK and Ireland, opening at Leicester Curve on Tuesday 13 October 2015. Cameron Mackintosh said “It’s hard to believe that it is already 11 years since Mary Poppins first landed on the London stage. My goodness……time flies even faster than our beloved Nanny! I’m delighted to be bringing her back to the UK and for the first time to Dublin, after spreading her magic around the world.
