The Jamie Lloyd Company presents One For The Road / New World Order / Mountain Language / Ashes To Ashes as part of its extraordinary season of one-act plays by Harold Pinter at the Harold Pinter Theatre.

Celebrating the legacy of one of the “most influential, provocative and poetic dramatist of his generation” (The Guardian), this dynamic collection of Harold Pinter’s most potent and dangerous political plays is directed by award-winning actress and long-time Pinter collaborator, Lia Williams.

Opening the Pinter at the Pinter season is the incendiary One for The Road, Pinter at his most terrifying; a chilling look into the torture of a family by a ruthless goverment official.

The New World Order explores how the abuse of power is legitimised in the name of freedom and democracy, as two brutal interrogators prepare to inflict their terrible punishment on a blind-folded insurgent.

Pinter investigates the suppression of ideas and the supposed threat of non-conformity in Mountain Language; a group of captives attempt to find a voice when their shared language is banned by the state.

The evening culminates with Ashes to Ashes, a richly atmospheric and compelling play in which the dark nightmare of human atrocity infiltrates a couple’s living room.

Pinter One is booking from 6 September 2018 to 20 October 2018 at the Harold Pinter Theatre, London.

One For The Road
Nicholas, a government official, in a country that could be, and probably is, anywhere; which is not to say nowhere, but everywhere, interrogates Victor, his wife Gila and their seven-year-old son Nicky. The hideous torture portrayed on stage is entirely verbal and more sinister than physical torture could ever be.

This disturbing, overtly-political piece about human rights and the abuses of totalitarian
New World Order

This short play opens with an insurgent sat blindfolded and bound to a chair. Two interrogators taunt the silent victim with talk of the punishment they are about to inflict upon him. One of the interrogators begins to cry, happy that they are making the world safe for democracy.

Mountain Language
Mountain Language is about the repression of the weakest, depriving them of a voice and making sure that even if they can speak the “language of the capital”, they won’t be able to.

This extraordinarily chilling short play focuses on the brutalities of a society which forbids a minority of its population to speak in their own language, it is a play of few words which add up to an eloquent indictment of the banning of any human utterance.’

Ashes To Ashes

Ashes to Ashes may give off an atmosphere of uncertainty, but every line of masterful dialogue is deliberate and it won’t explain itself to you. A man interviews a woman. She has been sexually brutalized in the past; is he her torturer and her nation’s political scourge?
