The Jamie Lloyd Company presents Landscape / A Kind of Alaska, starring Tamsin Greig and Keith Allen, as part of its extraordinary season of one-act plays by Harold Pinter at the Harold Pinter Theatre.
Celebrating the legacy of one of the “most influential, provocative and poetic dramatist of his generation” (The Guardian), Jamie Lloyd directs these two spellbinding plays that evoke the loneliness, isolation and the strange mists of time.
With echoes of the work of Samuel Beckett, Landscape is a minimalist marvel. A housekeeper, no longer young, is locked in a beautiful memory and her robust and extroverted ex-cellarman husband demands to be heard.
In A Kind of Alaska, a middle-aged woman named Deborah awakes from a twenty-nine-year sleep caused by the sickness Encephalitis Lethargica and is suspended between the conscious and unconscious worlds, trapped in the mind of a sixteen-year-old.
Landscape / A Kind of Alaska is booking from 25 October 2018 until 8 December 2018 at the Harold Pinter Theatre.
WHAT’S THE STORY?
Set in the kitchen of a country house, this minimalist play focuses on the interaction, or lack of it, between a husband and wife. The two characters appear to be talking to one another, though neither seem to listen. The role of language resonates in Landscape as the action of play is paused. Beth reminisces about a past romantic affair and Duff talks of more practical matters, and finally demands to be heard.
A Kind of Alaska
Deborah wakes from a twenty-nine year coma with the mind of a sixteen-year-old and a body that has aged without her consent. Her sister Pauline and Pauline’s husband, Hornby, who has been Deborah’s devoted doctor of three decades and who may have fallen in love with her, attempt to ease her back into the present day, withholding secrets from her as they do.
Lee Evans will perform the poignant Monologue and a selection of Pinter’s most hilarious comedy sketches, including the sketch Apart From That with Meera Syal.
Close friend and long-term Pinter collaborator Penelope Wilton will make 12 special guest appearances from 19 November, performing the witty monologue Tess, written for her by Pinter.
