The Best Man at the Playhouse Theatre starring Martin Shaw and Maureen Lipman
Long before the battles of Trump vs Clinton and Clinton vs Obama, came Gore Vidal’s Tony nominated political drama, The Best Man.
Does the best man always win the White House? Written over 60 years ago as a thinly veiled attack on the rise of an unscrupulous populist candidate over the ethical man, The Best Man remains as relevant as ever in today’s politically charged environment.
Martin Shaw (Judge John Deed) and American film star Jeff Fahey (Lost) lead the cast alongside one of Britain’s much loved actresses Maureen Lipman (Educating Rita, The Piano).
The Best Man runs from 24 February 2018 until 26 May 2018 at the Playhouse Theatre.
Two opposing presidential party candidates are neck and neck in an unscrupulous battle for the nomination.
The only thing that separates the ex-Secretary of State and his populist opponent is an endorsement from a respected ex-President.
But where does compromise end and corruption begin? How far will they each go to become the most powerful man in the world? And who in the end will be proven to be “the best man”?
The cast features Martin Shaw, Jack Shepherd, Maureen Lipman, Jeff Fahey and Honeysuckle Weeks.
Futher casting to be announced.
Directed by Simon Evans, written by Gore Vidal, with set and costume design by Michael Taylor, lighting design by Chris Davey and composition and sound design by Ed Lewis.
