Rent returns to London
Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning musical Rent returns to the London stage. A new production celebrating the 20th anniversary of Jonathan Larson’s acclaimed musical Rent is to be staged at the St James Theatre in London. Described as an “exhilarating, landmark rock opera”, RENT is inspired by Puccini’s La Bohème, depicting the lives, loves and losses of a group of bohemian artists living in New York during the height of the AIDS epidemic. The original production opened in 1996 and ran for 12 years on Broadway, where it won four Tony Awards, six Drama Desk Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The West End production opened in 1998 at the Shaftesbury theatre and ran for 18 months. Larson famously died from an un-diagnosed heart problem on the morning of the first preview of Rent and was posthumously awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The new production will be directed by Bruce Guthrie and features a cast of West End regulars including Ross Hunter, Billy Cullum, Layton Williams and Philippa Stefani. Guthrie commented “I am delighted to be working with a truly world-class creative team on this new production of Jonathan Larson's classic musical. Our aim is to serve the fans of the show who have loved it so passionately since its ground-breaking premiere”. The production also boasts a host of award-winning creatives, including Olivier Award winners Anna Fleischle, Rick Fisher and Mike Walker. Rent will run from 8 December 2016 until 28 January 2017 at the St James Theatre, following a short national tour. BOOKING Booking opens soon.
