Lyric Hammersmith Theatre has announced the return of Tony Award-winning play Jaja’s African Hair Braiding – running for five weeks from 28 January to 27 February 2027.
Tony Award-winning play Jaja’s African Hair Braiding is returning to Lyric Hammersmith Theatre following the show’s critically acclaimed UK premiere at the same venue in March 2026. The show is coming to the theatre from 28 January until 27 February 2027.
Writer Jocelyn Bioh (Merry Wives) and director Monique Touko (Wedding Band, Marie and Rosetta) reunite for the production, having previously collaborated on the smash hit School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play, and the cast for this revival of the play are yet to be announced.
Bioh said: “Words cannot begin to describe how thrilled I am that Jaja’s African Hair Braiding will be re-opening its shop doors once again at the Lyric Hammersmith! Under the stunning direction of my dear collaborator, Monique Touko, I was so moved by how much U.K. audiences embraced the play with so much love and admiration. In many ways, Jaja’s is about the power of community and I’m honoured to feel like I am now a part of this beautiful U.K. theatre community.”

What is Jaja’s African Hair Braiding about?
Jaja’s African Hair Braiding is set across one hot summer day in a bustling Harlem braiding salon, and follows a lively group of West African immigrant braiders as they contend with demanding customers, secrets, lies, laughter and betrayal. This all comes while pursuing their own dreams, dreams that increasingly put them at odds with the city they call home.
The show premiered on Broadway as part of Manhattan Theatre Club’s 2023–2024 season, where it was extended twice, had performances live-streamed due to demand, and went on to a US tour. It also won two Tony Awards from six nominations, and received eight further nominations across the Drama Desk, Drama League and Outer Critics Circle Awards.
