Nicole Kidman returns to London’s West End stage
Nicole Kidman returns to London’s West End stage Following a 17 year break, Nicole Kidman returns to the West End starring in Photograph 51 at the Noel Coward theatre. Photograph 51 is Anna Ziegler’s award-winning play about Rosalind Franklin, a pioneering DNA researcher in the 1950’s. Ziegler’s play asks what is sacrificed in the pursuit of science, love and a place in history. Rosalind Franklin, a lone woman in a male-dominated world of biochemistry took a series of photographs and one of them - the 51st - showed the double helix. Knowing that is was extraordinary, but unsure exactly why, she showed them to several other scientists - Maurice Wilkins, James Watson and Francis Crick – who did know. They went on to win the Noel Prize for the discovery of DNA and Rosalind Franklin was confined to the dustbin of history. Kidman said her father, a bio-chemist encouraged her to do the play and with his passing last year, she wanted to do it for him. Kidman was last seen on stage in The Blue Room - an erotic comedy written by David Hare and directed by Same Mendes - a play her and co-star Iain Glen were required to appear naked.  Kidman’s performance was described as ‘pure theatrical viagra’. The production will be directed by Michael Grandage and will mark his company’s return to the West End following his acclaimed season in 2013-2014. Directed by Michael Grandage, Photograph 51 starring Nicole Kidman will play the Noel Coward theatre for a strictly limited 11 week run from 5 September 2015 until 21 November 2015.
