Award-winning actress Maureen Lipman will join the cast of Right Before I Go. at London’s Soho Theatre for a limited run this September. The transfer of Stan Zimmerman’s suicide awareness play follows a hit run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and culminates in a performance on World Suicide Prevention Day.

Coming to Soho Theatre this September, Right Before I Go. by Stan Zimmerman (Golden Girls, Gilmore Girls) is an urgent piece that highlights the raw struggles of people from all walks of life who have been impacted by suicide. The production received strong reviews at the Fringe, having previously toured across the US.

It’s been announced today that Maureen Lipman (Coronation Street, See How They Run) will join the cast for World Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September at Soho Theatre.

On the news, Zimmerman said, “I’m beyond thrilled that Maureen Lipman will be joining our company. My late mother turned me onto Agony, which I watched religiously. It truly shaped me as a budding, young TV comedy writer. It will be an especially emotional performance, since 10 September is World Suicide Prevention Day.”

Lipman will be joined by a cast that includes Iz Hesketh (Renegade Nell), Dominique Moore (Horrible Histories), Claire-Marie Hall (Operation Mincemeat), Emrhys Cooper (Nosferatu), Gerard McCarthy (The Fall), Paul Bigley (Shakespeare in Love) and Tosh Wanogho-Maud (Kinky Boots), alongside Zimmerman himself.

About the play

Drawing on real suicide notes from celebrities, veterans, bullied teenagers, LGBTQ+ individuals and those who have survived attempts, Right Before I Go. highlights the raw struggles of people from all walks of life.

The London run will be performed as of Suicide Awareness Month, culminating on World Suicide Prevention Day.

Each performance is followed by a talkback between the cast, audience and a local mental health professional.

Zimmerman has commented that the play grew out of his experience processing the suicide of a close friend. He said:

“I was at a loss about how to process this. Seeing so much shame around the topic, I decided to create a play in the vein of The Vagina Monologues, easily produced with actors on stools, reading the script from music stands.

My hope is that this will create much needed discussion about a very complicated issue. I’m thrilled that London audiences will get the chance to see the show straight after our Edinburgh festival run, particularly during September, which is World Suicide Awareness Month.”

Right Before I Go. has previously toured across the US, including a run in New York at The Tank featuring Vanessa Williams, Olly Alexander, Christine Taylor and Patrick Page, and its Edinburgh run featured Wendie Malick and Emily Kuroda alongside Zimmerman.
