Oh, Mary! has announced the latest star to step into the boots of Mary Todd Lincoln. British comedian and actress Lolly Adefope is set to take over the role from Jinkx Monsoon from 28 September in a strictly limited run.

Lolly Adefope will star as Mary Todd Lincoln in Oh, Mary! for a strictly limited run from 28 September – 5 December 2026. While this marks her first outing in a scripted West End play, she is no stranger to the London stage: her acclaimed solo character-comedy shows have twice sold out runs in the West End, following celebrated appearances at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

The West End production currently stars Cole Escola, after which Jinkx Monsoon will star from 17 August until 26 September. Lolly Adefope will follow Monsoon in playing the former First Lady.

The comedian and actress is best known for her breakout role as Kitty, the ghost of a Georgian noblewoman, in the hit BBC sitcom Ghosts, for which she has been shortlisted and nominated for multiple National Comedy Awards. She is also known to American audiences as Fran in the acclaimed Hulu comedy Shrill, opposite Aidy Bryant.

Adefope trained as a stand-up comedian before moving into acting, honing her distinctive character comedy at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, where she first performed a solo show in 2015 after being selected for the BBC Writersroom programme. Her screen credits span both UK and US television and film, including Plebs, Damned, This Time with Alan Partridge, Sam Mendes and Armando Iannucci’s The Franchise, and the films Mission: Impossible – Fallout and The Spy Who Dumped Me.

What to Expect from Oh, Mary!

This 80-minute comedy reimagines Mary Todd Lincoln in the lead-up to husband Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. It’s a camp and absurdist take on history through the lens of a woman who drinks a bit too much and loves cabaret.

Written by Cole Escola, Oh, Mary! has captivated audiences on Broadway and in the West End, winning several Tony Awards and an Olivier Award. The Broadway production has also kept the show fresh by incorporating a rotation of celebrity casting. The West End is already following in that trend, with Adefope being the fifth Mary to take on the role since its debut at the Trafalgar Theatre at the end of last year. Keen to know more?
