A major new two-part adaptation of George Eliot’s novel Middlemarch is coming to the stage in 2026.

Produced by the RSC, this new adaptation of Middlemarch is by Nina Raine (Consent, Tribes, Tiger Country).

Middlemarch will be presented in two parts by the RSC at its Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon. Part 1 is playing from 1 October 2026, and Part 2 from 10 October 2026 to 16 January 2027.

George Eliot’s expansive study of provincial life will be directed by Jeremy Herrin (Wolf Hall, Guess How Much I Love You?, The Spy Who Came in From the Cold) in co-production with Herrin’s Second Half Productions (Every Brilliant Thing, Grace Pervades).

Middlemarch is the much-loved story of a fictional 1832 Midlands town at the precipice of pivotal social change.

Currently in London, Hampstead Theatre is premiering a new biographical drama about George Eliot, called Bird Grove.

RSC new season

The RSC’s new season for 2026 – 2027 also includes a major new all-male production of As You Like It starring Broadway’s Jonathan Groff; and Dame Harriet Walter, who returns to the role of Brutus for First Encounters: Julius Caesar.
