Quentin Tarantino has told a podcast that his new West End play is written and ready for the stage.
The director of award-winning movies including Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Inglourious Basterds was speaking on The Church of Tarantino podcast.
The two-time Oscar winner, and six-time Oscar-nominated director said that the play is “all written. It is absolutely the next thing I’m going to do. We’ll start the ball rolling on it in January… It’s probably going to take up a year and a half to two years of my life.”
Audiences shouldn’t get too excited though, as Tarantino also said that “it’ll probably be a year before it’s in front of an audience”, which puts a potential world premiere at early 2027.
In the interview Quentin did confirm that London was the preferred location for the play over Broadway, saying, “I’m having a great time with my kids and my family and everything, so let me just hang out with my family for the whole rest of the year and then I’ll more than likely move to England and bring my family with me and start working on the play.”
As of yet there are few details about the show, including whether it is a play or a musical, a comedy or a thriller.
However, there is a high chance that the new West End show will be a comedy. This time last year he told Bill Maher on Maher’s Club Random Podcast that he was exploring writing an original comedy play.
He told Maher, “I’m leaning more towards writing, or trying for a while, theatre” and that, “In a comedy play, the audience is a character in the room… when that works, that’s an evening out… which is hard to capture on film.”
The director is also up for adapting his play for the screen, saying “If it’s a popular play, then I’ll probably make a movie.”
This isn’t the first time Tarantino has wanted to write a play for the stage. Way back in 2016, he said that he planned to turn his hit movie The Hateful Eight into a play.
Tarantino said at the time that, “I’ve thought it out completely I’m just waiting for this [2016 awards] season to be over so I can write it.”
Quentin has been busy of late with multiple non-film projects, including the script of a Once Upon a Time in Hollywood sequel, to be directed by David Fincher.
An original Quentin Tarantino comedy on the West End stage would be a huge coup for London. We can’t wait.
