The National Theatre’s revival of John Millington Synge’s The Playboy of the Western World is now playing at the National Theatre’s Lyttelton Theatre until 28 February 2026.
Directed by Caitríona McLaughlin, Artistic Director of Ireland’s Abbey Theatre, the production stars Nicola Coughlan (Derry Girls, Bridgerton), Siobhán McSweeney (Derry Girls, Amandaland) and Éanna Hardwicke (Smother, Lakelands, The Sixth Commandment).
The cast also features Megan Cusack, Declan Conlon, Marty Rea, Lorcan Cranitch, Marty Breen, Naoise Dunbar, Matthew Forrest, Sallay Garnett, Fionnuala Gygax, Erin Hennessey, Susan Akintomide, Peter Mooney and Donncha O’Dea.

The revival of The Playboy of the Western World marks the first of two productions at the National this season to be helmed by McLaughlin.
Synge’s 1907 tragicomedy is a cornerstone of Irish drama, exploring identity, myth-making, and rebellion in rural County Mayo. The Playboy of the Western World caused outrage when it first premiered, for its unflinching portrayal of Irish rural life.

The National Theatre has also released the first poster image for The Playboy of the Western World, in a photo taken by Josh Shinner.
The wider creative team features set and costume design by Katie Davenport, lighting design by James Farncombe, sound design by Adrienne Quartly, and an original score by composer Anna Mullarkey. Casting is by Alastair Coomer CDG and Naomi Downham.
The Playboy of the Western World is now playing until 28 February 2026 at the Lyttelton Theatre, National Theatre in London.
