Sony Pictures Classics has released the official trailer for Blue Moon, a poignant new film from acclaimed director Richard Linklater and long-time collaborator Ethan Hawke.
Marking their ninth project together following films including the “Before” trilogy and Boyhood, Blue Moon is set to premiere in Los Angeles and New York on 17 October 2025, followed by a wider US and UK release on 24 October.
A look at Lorenz Hart’s final night
Blue Moon centres on the life of lyricist Lorenz Hart, portrayed by Ethan Hawke, one half of the legendary Broadway songwriting duo Rodgers & Hart (Pal Joey, On Your Toes, A Connecticut Yankee).
Set almost entirely on the evening of 31 March 1943, coinciding with the Broadway premiere of Oklahoma!, the story unfolds inside the iconic Sardi’s Restaurant in Manhattan. The evening not only marked the debut of Richard Rodgers’ new partnership with Oscar Hammerstein II, but also underscored the decline of his relationship with Hart, who was replaced on the landmark musical.
Adapted by Robert Kaplow, the film draws from his own historical insights and literary style — Kaplow also authored ‘Me and Orson Welles’, the source for Linklater’s earlier film of the same name. The movie promises to capture Hart’s brilliance and inner turmoil as he grapples with obsolescence, alcoholism, and the loss of his creative identity.
An award-winning ensemble
Joining Hawke in the cast are The Substance’s Margaret Qualley as Elizabeth Weiland, Bobby Cannavale (Nine Perfect Strangers) as Eddie, and Andrew Scott (Ripley, VANYA) who earned the Silver Bear for Best Supporting Performance at this year’s Berlin Film Festival for his role as Richard Rodgers.
Blue Moon production and creative team
Produced by Linklater, Mike Blizzard (Hit Man, Apollo 10½), and Linklater’s manager John Sloss (Boyhood, Green Book), Blue Moon is a collaboration between Detour and Renovo, in association with Wild Atlantic Pictures, Under The Influence, and Cinetic Media. Executive producers include Macdara Kelleher, Donna Eperon, John Keville, David Kingland, Lisa Crnic, Aaron Wiederspahn, and Steven Farneth.
