REVIEWS ROUND-UP

"... this piece – written by Andrew Sherlock and directed by Jen Heyes – is surprisingly good: continually intriguing, informative and, though it has some dud and clumsy passages, offering quite a nuanced portrait of the failed RADA actor who returned to work in the Liverpool family store and then had one of the must lucrative epiphanies in the history of mankind when he laid eyes on four music-making scruffs in the Cavern. "

"A solid effort, but low on narrative or stylistic innovation, Epstein is ultimately an old-fashioned exercise in talk-heavy theater. It throws little fresh light on its subject, but it does succeed in invoking empathy for a sensitive young man crushed by his own success at the cruelly young age of 32. This play has two acts. Fate only granted Epstein one."

"Andrew Lancel’s Epstein is touching, prissy and immensely camp. Will Finlason makes an eager, slightly saccharine young foil as This Boy. It’s not a startling piece of drama, but it is nuanced and interesting. And Epstein is revealed to a point."

"It’s not about The Beatles, let’s get that straight. That’s the deal struck by our fresh-faced narrator before this story of Brian Epstein begins. But it is, of course. They swarm over Andrew Sherlock’s play and turn up in every crack and cranny of the life he sketches."
