West End star Kerry Ellis is to return to Wicked at the Apollo Victoria in London.
Kerry Ellis, who was the first British actress to take on the role of witch Elphaba in the hit musical Wicked, is to return to the role.
Kerry Ellis will join Wicked as Elphaba for 12 weeks only from 4 August to 25 October 2014.
She takes over from Willemijn Verkaik, who has had to pull out of the show early in order to have emergency back surgery. Her last performance is on 19 July 2014.
Willemijn Verkaik said in a statement that: “To be given the chance to play Elphaba in four different countries is something I am incredibly grateful for. Now I have to cut my West End run short and it’s absolutely devastating to me. I’ve been fighting this injury for a few months but was determined not to let anything get in the way of my West End debut and certainly not wanting to disappoint the audiences. But I have to face the facts.”
Kerry Ellis was said to be thrilled to be returning to the role.
Kerry’s stage credits include Wicked, We Will Rock You, Oliver!, Les Miserables, Miss Saigon and My Fair Lady. She has performed extensively with Brian May, and recently appeared with Kristin Chenoweth in An Evening with Kristin Chenoweth at the Royal Albert Hall.
Wicked has music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, a book by Winnie Holzman, musical staging by Wayne Cilento and is directed by two-time Tony Award® winner Joe Mantello. Wicked is based on the novel, ʻWicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the Westʼ, by Gregory Maguire.
