Sony Pictures Classics has picked up worldwide distribution rights to the filmed version of Broadway’s critically acclaimed revival of Merrily We Roll Along, directed by Maria Friedman and starring Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe, and Lindsay Mendez.
Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s musical tells the story of three close friends — composer Franklin Shepard (Groff), playwright Charley Kringas (Radcliffe), and novelist Mary Flynn (Mendez) — in reverse chronological order, tracing their journey from disillusioned adulthood back to the hopeful beginnings of their friendship. The show features an unforgettable score including “Now You Know,” “Not A Day Goes By,” and “Old Friends”.
A specific release timeline for the film has yet to be announced, but it is being described as an “immersive” and “intimate” cinematic experience that captures Friedman’s visionary staging up close. “This isn’t just a stage production captured on film—it’s something more intimate,” said Friedman. “The camera lets us see every flicker of feeling, every quiet shift, in a way that brings audiences closer than ever.”
The film features the Broadway cast that earned the 2024 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical, with Groff and Radcliffe both winning Tonys for their performances. Mendez, a previous Tony winner, joined them in the leading trio. The supporting cast includes Krystal Joy Brown as Gussie Carnegie, Katie Rose Clarke as Beth Shepard, and Reg Rogers as Joe Josephson.
Additional cast members include Max Rackenberg, Rocco Van Auken, Brady Wagner, Sherz Aletaha, Maya Boyd, Leana Rae Concepcion, Morgan Kirner, Ken Krugman, Corey Mach, Talia Simone Robinson, Amanda Rose, Jamila Sabares-Klemm, Brian Sears, Evan Alexander Smith, Christian Strange, Koray Tarhan, Vishal Vaidya, Natalie Wachen, and Jacob Keith Watson.
The creative team includes choreographer Tim Jackson, set and costume designer Soutra Gilmour, lighting designer Amith Chandrashaker, sound designer Kai Harada, orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick, and music direction by Alvin Hough Jr.
The film is produced by Sonia Friedman, David Babani, Patrick Catullo, F. Richard Pappas, and RadicalMedia’s Jon Kamen and Dave Sirulnick. Executive producers include Meredith Bennett, No Guarantees Productions, and others, with Karla Zambrano and Alec Sash as supervising producers.
The Broadway revival, which began at New York Theatre Workshop in 2022 before transferring to the Hudson Theatre, was widely acclaimed, with The Guardian predicting that “Friedman’s interpretation will probably be regarded as a gold standard,” and The New York Times praising how her staging “brings the intelligence of the songs fully alive.” Read a round-up of reviews here and Broadway production photos here.
The Broadway revival originated at the Menier Chocolate Factory in London, later transferring to the Harold Pinter Theatre in the West End. This marks the second time Friedman’s production has been filmed — the first was during its West End run, featuring Mark Umbers, Damian Humbley and Jenna Russell.
