An Oak Tree, Tim Crouch‘s groundbreaking and deeply moving play, is famous for its extraordinary premise, in which a different guest performer joins Crouch on stage at every performance, having never seen or read a single word of it, is coming to The Other Palace.

One of the most influential and celebrated plays of the 21st century, An Oak Tree returns to London as part of Francesca Moody Productions’ first full season at The Other Palace, running from 7 October to 15 November 2026.

Its groundbreaking premise is what makes it a theatrical event like no other: at every single performance, writer and performer Tim Crouch is joined by a different guest artist who steps on stage without ever having read or rehearsed the play.

Over the past two decades, more than 350 performers have taken on the challenge — a remarkable roll call that has included Frances McDormand, Geoffrey Rush, Peter Dinklage, David Tennant, Jessie Buckley, Sophie Okonedo, Indira Varma, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Michelle Terry, among many others.

At its heart, An Oak Tree is a bold and absurdly comic story of loss, suggestion and the power of the mind. A father loses his daughter in a car accident; the driver of the car that killed her is a stage hypnotist; and the two men meet for the first time when the father volunteers for the hypnotist’s act. Please note the play contains strong language and references to grief, the death of a child and suicide.

Book An Oak Tree tickets

An Oak Tree plays a strictly limited season at The Other Palace from 7 October to 15 November 2026, as the opening production of Francesca Moody Productions’ first full season at the venue.

With a different guest performer every night and a short run, no two performances are ever the same, so early booking is recommended.

The story in An Oak Tree centres on a bereaved father called Andy, played each night by an actor who has not seen the script in advance.

Following the death of his daughter in a road accident, Andy finds the driver responsible, a second-rate stage hypnotist played by Tim Crouch, and volunteers to participate in his act hoping for closure.
