Brand new West End show The Devil Wears Prada A New Musical had its official gala opening last night, 1 December 2024, at the West End’s Dominion Theatre in London, followed by a party at the British Museum.
The gala was in aid of the Elton John AIDS Foundation.
Guests at the gala included the composer of the show, Elton John, along with Donatella Versace, and Vogue editor Anna Wintour, plus Elizabeth Hurley and her son Damian Hurley, Arlene Phillips, Charlie McDowell and Lily Collins, Dylan Mulvaney, La Voix, Claire Sweeney, Michelle Visage, Luke Evans, Darcey Bussell, Graham Norton, Clare Balding, Edward Enninful, Bob Geldof, Zandra Rhodes, and Amelia Dimoldenber.

In a speech during the curtain call, Elton John revealed that he is no longer able to see since getting an infection in his right eye in July: “I have lost my sight and I haven’t been able to see the performance but I have enjoyed listening to it.”
Vogue fashion magazine editor Anna Wintour attended the gala. The show’s lead character Miranda Priestly is rumoured to be based on Wintour, and she told the BBC that it was “for the audience and for the people I work with to decide if there are any similarities between me and Miranda Priestly”!
Movie-to-stage musical The Devil Wears Prada is now playing in the West End, directed and choreographed by Tony and Olivier Award-winner Jerry Mitchell (Legally Blonde, Pretty Woman The Musical, Kinky Boots), and starring US stage and screen star Vanessa Williams (Ugly Betty, Desperate Housewives, City of Angels) as Runway magazine editor Miranda Priestly, played by Meryl Streep in the movie.

The Devil Wears Prada The Musical is based on the blockbuster film and bestselling novel by Lauren Weisberger, and features an original score by music legend and EGOT winner Elton John (Disney’s The Lion King), lyrics by singer-songwriter Shaina Taub, and a book by Kate Wetherhead (Submissions Only).

The cast also includes Olivier Award winner Matt Henry (Kinky Boots, The Drifters Girl) as Nigel, her trusted fashion expert, played by Stanley Tucci in the film; Georgie Buckland (Shrek the Musical, Bedknobs and Broomsticks) as newbie assistant Andy, played by Anne Hathaway in the movie; and Amy Di Bartolomeo (Six The Musical, We Will Rock You) as Miranda’s chief assistant Emily, played in the film by Emily Blunt.

The Devil Wears Prada also stars James Darch (Mamma Mia!) as devious journalist Christian, Rhys Whitfield (The Phantom of the Opera) as Andy’s boyfriend Nate, and Debbie Kurup (FANGIRLS, The Cher Show) will feature as Standby Miranda at the Dominion Theatre.
