Hollywood star Paul Mescal may be heading to the New York stage in 2025.
Mescal is rumoured to be reprising his role as Stanley Kowalski in Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire.
The role would be his New York stage debut.
Directed by Olivier and Critics’ Circle Award winner Rebecca Frecknall (Cabaret), the production originated at the Almeida Theatre in London, and transferred to the West End’s Phoenix Theatre in March 2023.
Deadline first reported that A Streetcar Named Desire is eyeing a Broadway run at the beginning of 2025, allowing Mescal to then start shooting new Ridley Scott movie The Dog Stars in spring 2025.
That timing had seemed ambitious for a West End transfer to New York , although the production is fully formed and has big backers: the original London transfer into the West End was orchestrated by ATG Productions, part of West End – and Broadway – theatre owners ATG.
Variety has now weighed in, saying that Streetcar will actually return to London first – playing the Noel Coward Theatre from 3 – 22 February 2025, before heading to Brooklyn in New York.
Further casting for the Broadway production is unconfirmed. The London production also starred Olivier Award winner Patsy Ferran (Pygmalion, Summer & Smoke) as Blanche, Anjana Vasan (Brace Brace, We Are Lady Parts) as Stella, and Dwane Walcott (One Night in Miami, Our Girl) as Harold ‘Mitch’ Mitchell.
The production was a sensation in London, scoring impressive reviews from the critics, including five-stars from The Times, The Sunday Times, The Observer, and The i. The show also picked up Best Revival at the 2023 Olivier Awards, with Mescal and Vasan taking home acting awards.
Paul Mescal (All of Us Strangers, Aftersun, Normal People) recently worked with Ridley Scott on Gladiator 2, which opens in UK cinemas next week, on 15 November 2024.
The creative team of A Streetcar Named Desire also includes Set Designer Madeleine Girling, Costume Designer Merle Hensel, Lighting Designer Lee Curran, Sound Designer Peter Rice, Composer Angus MacRae and Casting Director Julia Horan CDG.
