Porgy and Bess at the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre
Open Air Theatre, Inner Circle, Regent's Park, London, NW1 4NR
The Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess comes to the Open Air Theatre in Regent’s Park this Summer.
This acclaimed and respectful adaptation by Suzan-Lori Parke and Diedre L. Murray of The Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, retains the essence of the original, classic 1935 musical whilst giving it a contemporary spin.
Winner of two Tony Awards in 2012 including Best Revival of a Musical, this intimate and atmospheric production features some of the most famous songs in the Great American musical songbook including I Got Plenty Of Nothing, It Ain’t Necessarily So, I Loves You Porgy and the poignantly beautiful Summertime.
Porgy and Bess is directed by Tim Sheader with designs by Katrina Lindsay.
This powerful tale of love and betrayal is the story of crippled beggar Porgy, who devotes himself body and soul to taming his wild love Bess and saving her from a life of ruin. Yet, despite Porgy’s best efforts, new beginnings give way to temptation as Bess is haunted by the demons of her past.
A fabulous British and American cast includes Rufus Bonds Jr (The Color Purple, Disney’s The Lion King, Parade) as Porgy and Nicola Hughes (The Color Purple, Fosse, Chicago) as Bess, along with Phillip Boykin as Crown, Cedric Neal as Sportin’ Life and Olivier Award-winning Sharon D Clarke as Mariah.
Other cast includes David Albury, Angela Caesar, Jade Ewen, Alex Giannini, Owain Gwynn, Tyrone Huntley, George Ikediashi, Claudia Kariuki, Arthur Kyeyune, Oliver Lidert, Leon Lopez, Jay Marsh, Tania Mathurin, Ellen O’Grady, Golda Rosheuvel, Yemie Sonuga and Marvin Springer.
