News about Memphis

Matt Cardle joins the cast of Memphis
X Factor's Matt Cardle joins the cast of Memphis The Musical [caption id="attachment_37189" align="alignright" width="240"] Beverley Knight & Matt Cardle[/caption] Multi-platinum selling recording artist and songwriter Matt Cardle, who rose to fame winning the seventh series of ITVs The X Factor, joins the cast of Memphis The Musical at London's Shaftesbury Theatre from 6 July 2015.  Matt takes over the lead role of DJ Huey Calhoun, currently played by Killian Donnelly who is leaving to star in Kinky Boots The Musical at the Adelphi theatre. Matt will join Queen of British Soul, Beverley Knight,  who extends her run as club singer Felicia Farrel in the award-winning Best Musical Memphis The Muscial through October 2015. Matt Cardle says: “I’m thrilled to be making my acting and West End debut in Memphis. From the first time I saw the show I felt I had a real connection with the character of Huey. It’s no secret that I worked for many years before my breakthrough as a musician. I started my first band when I was 12 years old and spent at least 15 years recording albums and sending demos to record companies before finally having my voice heard. It was the united love from family and friends, similar to that at the heart of the Memphis story, that saw me through. I am truly honoured to be sharing the stage with the incredible Beverley Knight, I’ve admired her work for such a long time and can’t wait to get started in the show”. Beverley Knight says: "I can’t wait to continue my Memphis journey into the autumn with Matt - who will be a fantastic addition to our Memphis family. We all know he has a "fantastical" voice; I think many will be wonderfully surprised by his ability on stage. We are all going to miss Killian when he leaves but his last few weeks will be party time at the show! Bring it all on! Hockadoo!" Inspired by true events from the underground dance clubs of 1950s Memphis, Tennessee, Memphis The Musical follows the fame and forbidden love of a radio DJ who wants to change the world and a club singer who is ready for her big break. A reviews round-up of Memphis The Musical starring Beverley Knight at the Shaftesbury Theatre [caption id="" align="alignright" width="240"] Beverley Knight and Killian Donnelly in Memphis[/caption] The critics have reviewed Memphis The Musical - and it's a smash hit! The show's two leads in particular - Beverley Knight as club singer Felicia Farrell and Killian Donnelly as radio DJ Huey Calhoun -  are singled out for praise in the reviews. The Tony Award-winning show also includes some strong cast support including Rolan Bell as Delray, Tyrone Huntley as Gator, Claire Machin as Gladys, Jason Pennycooke as Bobby and Mark Roper as Mr. Simmons. Memphis has a Grammy Award-winning original score by Bon Jovi founding member David Bryan and book by Joe DiPietro and is inspired by true events from the underground dance clubs of 1950s Memphis, Tennessee, following the fame and forbidden love of a radio DJ who wants to change the world and a club singer who is ready for her big break. What We Thought We absolutely loved Memphis -  as did the audience on the preview performance we saw. Every single element of the show nails it completely – including the incredible performances (and that goes for the ensemble as well as the leads), and the slick staging and choreography… you don’t often see a cast of this size and at the level they are performing. The songs are like classics you are hearing for the first time – which is quite something given the volume of jukebox shows at the moment. Surely to God it is going to win awards and run for years. If they can keep up the quality of the performances and the incredible energy then it deserves to. BOOK Book tickets to Memphis The Musical starring Beverley Knight at the Shaftesbury Theatre
