A Taste Of Honey at the National Theatre starring Lesley Sharp

Sorry, this show is not currently booking.

Shelagh Delaney’s modern classic is revived at the National Theatre starring Lesley Sharp and Kate O’Flynn.

The National Theatre presents Shelagh Delaney’s controversial, taboo-breaking play A Taste of Honey, which shook the 1950’s and heralded a new generation of British playwrights.

A Taste of Honey, playing in the National’s Lyttelton Theatre until 11 May 2014, is an explosive celebration of the vulnerabilities and strengths of the female spirit in a deprived and restless world.

Directed by Bijan Sheibani and designed by Hildegard Bechtler, this exhilarating and angry depiction of harsh, working-class life in post-war Salford is shot through with love and humour, and infused with jazz.

THE STORY

When her mother Helen (Lesley Sharp) runs off with a car salesman, feisty teenager Jo (Kate O’Flynn) takes up with a black sailor. He promises to marry her, but instead heads off for the open sea leaving her pregnant and alone. Art student Geoff moves in and assumes the role of surrogate parent until, misguidedly, he sends for Helen and their unconventional setup  quickly unravels.

THE CAST

An extraordinary cast includes Kate O’Flynn as Jo, Lesley Sharp as her mother Helen, plus Eric Kofi Abrefa, Kate Adler, Greg Baxter, Harry Hepple, Dean Lennox Kelly, Miles Mitchell, Mark Rose and Sarah Thom.
