Lia Williams out, Justine Mitchell in for Alma Mater at the Almeida

Stage and screen star Lia Williams has had to withdraw from the Almeida Theatre’s current production of Alma Mater by Kendall Feaver, directed by Polly Findlay.

Her role will now be played by Justine Mitchell (Faith Healer).

A statement from the venue said that ““Lia Williams has withdrawn from Alma Mater due to ill health. The role will now be played by Justine Mitchell.”

Justine Mitchell starts performances in the show on Monday 24 June 2024.

The remaining cast includes Olivier Award winner Nathaniel Parker (Rock ‘n’ Roll, Wolf Hall), Phoebe Campbell (House of the Dragon; The Importance of Being Earnest), Liv Hill (The Jungle, Top Girls), Liam Lau-Fernandez (A Playlist for the Revolution), Susannah Wise (Three Sisters), and Nathalie Armin (The Doctor).

Lia Williams is an acclaimed actor with roles including The Vortex and Mary Stuart on stage, and The Crown and The Capture on TV.

Justine Mitchell’s credits include Bash and Blithe Spirit at the Gate Theatre in Dublin, and is a UK Theatre Award winner for For Services Rendered at Chichester Festival Theatre. Her recent TV credits include A Spy Among Friends and Derry Girls.

Directed by Polly Findlay (Assassins, Beginning), this new play by Kendall Feaver (The Almighty Sometimes) is a sharp new look at the ever-growing generational divide between activists, centred on Jo Mulligan, the first female master in her prestigious college’s history.

The creative team for Alma Mater also includes Set Designer Vicki Mortimer, Costume Designer Fay Fullerton, Lighting Designer Jessica Hung Han Yun, Sound Designer Ian Dickinson, Composer Alev Lenz, Movement Director Shelley Maxwell, and Casting Director Amy Ball CDG.

Alma Mater is playing at the Almeida Theatre to 20 July 2024.
