Bridgerton’s Jonathan Bailey (Company, Wicked) is set to lead a new production of Shakespeare’s Richard II at the Bridge Theatre in London, directed by Nicholas Hytner.
Richard II will play at the Bridge Theatre for 13 weeks from 10 February 2025.
Jonathan Bailey and Nicholas Hytner reunite following Othello at the National Theatre in 2013.
Richard II is one of Shakespeare’s most famous history plays, centred on the tragic downfall of the King, and the machinations of his noblemen.
Jonathan Bailey is one of the fastest rising stars of stage and screen. He is playing Fiyero in the forthcoming blockbuster movie adaptations of Wicked starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande; and set to star in the next Jurassic Park movie – Jurassic World 4.
Bailey returns to the London stage following his Olivier Award winning performance in Marianne Elliott’s acclaimed production of Stephen Sondheim musical Company at the Gielgud Theatre.
Jonathan also starred in Cock at the West End’s Ambassadors theatre; King Lear at Chichester Festival Theatre starring Ian McKellen; plus The York Realist (Donmwar Warehouse / Crucible Sheffield), The Last Five Years (The Other Palace), American Psycho (Almeida Theatre), South Downs (Chichester, West End), The House of Special Purpose (Chichester), Girl with a Pearl Earring (Cambridge Arts Theatre, West End), The Mother Ship (Birmingham Rep), Pretend You Have Big Buildings (Royal Exchange Manchester), Beautiful Thing (Sound Theatre), King John (RSC at the Barbican), Les Miserables (West End), and Les Enfants du Paradis and A Christmas Carol (RSC at the Barbican).
Jonathan Bailey’s TV credits include Fellow Travelers (Paramount+) for which he won a best supporting Critics’ Choice Television Award; his starring role as Anthony Bridgerton in Netflix’s hugely successful drama Bridgerton; and a forthcoming role in Netflix queer drama Heartstopper.
Other TV credits include WIA, Crashing, Broadchurch, Jack Ryan and Leonardo; and other film credits include The Mercy with Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz, and The Young Messiah with Sean Bean and Christian McKay.
Run by Nicholas Hytner’s London Theatre Company, The Bridge Theatre has been occupied for the last few years by Hytner’s acclaimed production of classic Broadway musical Guys & Dolls, which ends its run in London on 4 January 2025.
Nicholas Hytner’s other current projects include directing John Lithgow in Giant at the Royal Court Theatre, from 20 September 2024; and directing a new Alan Bennett movie titled The Choral starring Ralph Fiennes, Simon Russell-Beale and Jim Broadbent.
Richard II will be designed by Bob Crowley, with an auditorium that is a hybrid configuration between in-the-round and traverse. Other creatives include Lighting designer Bruno Poet, Associate Director Lily Dyble, and Casting director Robert Sterne, with further creatives to be announced.
Richard II is playing at the Bridge Theatre from 10 February to 10 May 2025.
