The Hunger Games London stage show delayed to January 2025

The major new stage adaptation of The Hunger Games has been delayed.

The Hunger Games On Stage will see Olivier Award-winning playwright Conor McPherson (Girl from the North Country, The Weir) adapt the first book from Suzanne Collins’ epic series and the first film from Lionsgate’s iconic dystopian film franchise for this live theatrical production.

The stage adaptation was originally to have its world premiere in London in autumn 2024, although this has now been delayed to January 2025.

Direction will be by Matthew Dunster (Hedda, Shirley Valentine, 2:22 – A Ghost Story, The Pillowman), alongside a creative team that includes Miriam Buether (set designer), Moi Tran (costume designer), Charlotte Broom (choreographer), Lucy Carter (lighting designer), Ian Dickinson for Autograph (sound designer), Tal Rosner (video designer), Kev McCurdy (fight director), John Maddox for Suspended Illusions (performer flying), Amy Ball (casting director), and Gary Beestone (production manager).

News of the delay came today, 3 May 2024, with the announcement of Matthew Dunster’s next project – Hedda, a re-imagining of Henrik Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler, coming to the Theatre Royal Bath in summer 2025 starring Lily Allen.

There’s no current news on a venue for The Hunger Games – which is believed to be a specially built venue in London; or any details on specific dates or casting.

The Hunger Games On Stage will be the first ever live stage adaptation of the acclaimed The Hunger Games books, which are set in a dystopian future where 24 young tributes are pitted against each other in a deadly arena.

The Hunger Games On Stage will be produced by Tristan Baker and Charlie Parsons for Runaway Entertainment, Oliver Royds for BOS Productions and Isobel David, by arrangement with Lionsgate.

Lionsgate’s movie of The Hunger Games is one of the highest-grossing movie franchises of all time, grossing nearly $3 billion in box office sales worldwide. The new movie in the franchise, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, was released last year.

Other new sci-fi movies and shows that have made the transition to the stage include Stranger Things: The First Shadow, now playing at the Phoenix Theatre in London; and current Lyric Hammersmith show Minority Report, which is running to 18 May 2024.
