The creators of Macbeth, the acclaimed new production of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy, have released more information about the use of audience headphones for the production.
It was announced today that Macbeth will transfer from the Donmar Warehouse to the West End’s Harold Pinter Theatre in London, starring the show’s original cast including David Tennant (Doctor Who, Broadchurch) as Macbeth, and Cush Jumbo (The Good Wife) as Lady MacBeth .
Directed by Directed by Max Webster (Minority Report, Life of Pi), the sound designer on the show is Gareth Fry. Fry has designed an extraordinary sound experience for Macbeth, using groundbreaking Binaural sound technology to create a 3D soundscape, which the audience experiences by wearing headphones. Every whisper on stage is heard by the audience, with sound becoming a central, critical part of the production.
Producers have now revealed that this will be accomplished at the Harold Pinter Theatre by providing a pair of wired on-ear headphones to every audience member, which are installed at each seat and in wheelchair spaces.
The headphones will be very lightweight, with foam ear-pads for comfort, and won’t have a volume control – with the theatre’s sound engineers ensuring that the volume remains at a balanced and safe volume. If you have a sensitivity to loud volumes, they can also provide a system where it can be turned down manually.
A sound check will be played in the auditorium before the show, which will allow audience members to test out what works for them; and there will be alternative options available including Over Ear Headphones, Hearing Aids with direct input, Induction loop support, Bluetooth transmitter, Volume booster, Independent volume control, Mono dialogue enhanced mix, and solutions for audience members with mysophobia.
