Full casting has been announced for the forthcoming 2024 & 2025 UK & Ireland tour of hit musical Hairspray.
Haispray will star Alexandra Emmerson-Kirby as Tracy Turnblad; Neil Hurst as Edna Turnblad; Joanne Clifton as Velma Von Tussle, with Gina Murray playing the role from 16 July to 7 September; Michelle Ndegwa as Motormouth Maybelle, Soloman Davy as Link Larkin, Declan Egan as Corny Collins, Katlo as Little Inez, Reece Richards as Seaweed, Allana Taylor as Amber Von Tussle, and Freya McMahon as Penny Pingleton.
The ensemble features Ben Anderson, Grace Anyiam, Nina Bell, Joseph Bristow, Vanessa Dumatey, Rebecca French, Stuart Hickey, Marcellus Hill, Shemar Jarrett, Kirsty Sparks, Jaiden Lodge, Olly Manley, Sasha Monique, Jacob Smith and Issie Wilman; and the show also includes Joseph Bristow, Ryan Appiah-Sarpong, Duncan Burt, Shaniquah Notice-Morris and Emily Ann Potter.
Hairspray is directed by Paul Kerryson (Chicago, Sweeney Todd), and Brenda Edwards (Hairspray, We Will Rock You, Loose Women), and choreographed by Olivier Award winner and artistic director of Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, Drew McOnie (In the Heights, Jesus Christ Superstar).
The creative team for the musical also includes Musical Supervising and Arrangement by Ben Atkinson, Set and Costume Design by Takis, Lighting Design by Philip Gladwell, Sound Design by Ben Harrison, Video Design by George Reeves, Musical Direction and Supervision by Richard Atkinson, Projection Design by George Reeve, Casting by Grindrod Burton and Resident Director is Juliet Gough.
Hairpsray kicks off its tour this month at the Manchester Palace Theatre on 16 July 2024, and visits cities including Cardiff, Canterbury, Cheltenham, Liverpool, Belfast, Milton Keynes, Southend, Birmingham, Leicester, Brighton, Edinburgh, Sheffield, York, Nottingham, Newcastle, Hull, Bradford, Southampton, Aberdeen, Glasgow, Wolverhampton, Norwich, Aylesbury, Bristol, Woking, Cymru, and Sunderland. The show is also playing London’s New Wimbledon Theatre from 21 to 26 October 2024.
Michelle Ndegwa is making her professional debut in the show as Motormouth Maybelle having been selected from more than 3,000 people who applied to the open auditions in November last year. Michelle is a soul and gospel singer best known for her performances as a vocalist for the Gorillaz.
Hairspray is the joyous Broadway and West End hit musical with songs that include Welcome To The 60s, You Can’t Stop The Beat and Good Morning Baltimore.
The show is written by Academy Award, Tony and Emmy winning duo Marc Shaiman (music and lyrics) and Scott Wittman (lyrics), with a book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan, and is based on the 1988 film by cult filmmaker John Waters.
