Shucked star Alex Newell to headline Pippin concert at the London Palladium

A new concert version of classic musical Pippin is set to play the London Palladium in April.

This 50th anniversary concert version of Pippin will star Tony Award winner Alex Newell (Shucked, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist) as the Leading Player, with further casting to be announced.

Directed by Jonathan O’Boyle (The Last Five Years, Pippin, Aspects of Love), with musical direction by Chris Ma, the concert will feature the London Musical Theatre Orchestra and a choir of 50.

Pippin has music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked), a book by Roger O. Hirson, and features classic songs including Corner of the Sky and Magic to Do.

Alex Newell’s other credits include NBC’s Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, Once on This Island, and Glee. Read more about Alex Newell here.

The show is produced by Katy Lipson for Aria Entertainment and Carter Dixon McGill Productions.

Composer Stephen Schwartz said in a statement: “Although there have been some excellent recent productions of Pippin in the UK, the show never gets to be heard with a full live orchestra and choir. This concert, with a cast led by the astonishing Alex Newell and produced under the always first-rate auspices of Katy Lipson’s Aria Entertainment and Carter Dixon McGill, promises to be a once-in-a-blue-moon event. I for one cannot wait to experience it!”

The news comes the same day that a concert version of Bare starring Jordan Luke Gage and Laurie Kynaston was announced for the Palladium for April.

Pippin will play in concert at the London Palladium on 1 and 2 April 2024.
