UK pop stars Steps have announced that their songs are being turned into a new musical called Here & Now – The Steps Musical.
Here & Now will have its world premiere at the Alexandra theatre in Birmingham, running from 9 to 24 November 2024.
The show will be directed by Rachel Kavanaugh (The Great British Bake Off Musical, Sleuth UK Tour), with choreography by Olivier Award winner Matt Cole (Disney’s Newsies), and the musical has an original book by Shaun Kitchener (Hollyoaks).
Here & Now – The Steps Musical will feature all of Steps’ hit songs, including Tragedy/Heartbeat, Stomp, One For Sorrow, Better Best Forgotten, 5,6,7,8, Last Thing On My Mind, Love’s Got A Hold Of My Heart, Chain Reaction, and many more.
Casting for the show is to be announced. There is no word whether any of the members of Steps will star in the show, notably Faye Tozer, who has appeared in multiple musicals and plays on stage including Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tell Me on a Sunday, Love Shack, Saucy Jack and the Space Vixens, Me and My Girl, Dial M for Murder, Over the Rainbow – the Eva Cassidy Story, The Tailor-Made Man, and Everybody’s Talking About Jamie in the West End.
Also Ian ‘H’ Watkins, who has appeared in musicals including Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Fame, and musical Rhinestone Mondays with Faye Tozer; plus Lee Latchford-Evans has appeared in the West End’s Grease The Musical.
In addition to Here & Now’s Birmingham premiere, the show is also headed to the West End, although no further details on timing or venues have been announced.
The show will undoubtedly also go out on a UK tour, especially given that the show is produced by Pete Waterman, the music Svengali behind Stock, Aitken & Waterman and who has new UK tour I Should Be So Lucky The Musical running, based on their songs; and producer ROYO, who are producing the forthcoming UK tour of Now That’s What I Call A Musical, plus Police Cops: The Musical at Southwark Playhouse Borough, and show including 13 Going on 30 The Musical, The Cher Show, Fisherman’s Friends: The Musical and Disney’s Winnie The Pooh: The New Musical.
The story of Here & Now centres on seaside superstore Better Best Bargains, where it’s Friday night, the vibe is right, and everyone’s dancing in the aisles. But when Caz discovers the shelves are stocked with lies and betrayal, the summer of love she and her friends dreamed of suddenly feels like a tragedy. Have they all lost their chance of a ‘happy ever after’? Or does love have other plans in store…
Other creatives attached to the show include set design by Tom Rogers, costume design by Gabriella Slade, sound design by Adam Fisher, and casting by Will Burton for Grindrod Burton Casting.
Steps said in a statement: “We’ve been lucky to do many things together as a band, but the question we get asked again and again is ‘where is the Steps musical?’ Well…it’s finally here and we couldn’t be more excited. We’ve searched for the perfect story for our music and we’ve found it in the aisle of a seaside superstore, where four friends set out on their own Summer of Love. It’s a story of friendship, romance and community; packed with our biggest hits and sure to have everybody laughing, crying and dancing in the aisles. We can’t wait to open the doors later this year, and see you there!”
