The National Theatre has announced final casting for its forthcoming revival of The House of Bernarda Alba, directed by Rebecca Frecknall (Cabaret) and starring Harriet Walter (Succession).
Adapted by Alice Birch (Normal People), the production promises to be a radical reworking of Federico GarcÃa Lorca’s classic.
Casting already announced includes Harriet Walter (Succession, Killing Eve) as Bernarda Alba, with Isis Hainsworth (Rebecca Frecknall’s Romeo & Juliet) as Adela, the youngest of Bernarda’s daughters.
They are joined by Rosalind Eleazar (Slow Horses) as Angustias; Thusitha Jayasundera (The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power) as Poncia; Lizzie Annis (Extraordinary) as Martirio; Pearl Chanda (War of the Worlds) as Magdalena; Bryony Hannah (Call the Midwife) as Maid; Marcia Lecky (The Scottsboro Boys) as Prudencia; Eileen Nicholas (Village Idiot) as Maria Josefa; and Eliot Salt (Fate: The Winx Saga) as Ameila.
The cast also includes Catharine Humphrys, Asha Kingsley, Celia Nelson, Ellouise Shakespeare-Hart, Georgia Silver, Imogen Mackie Walker, Charlotte Workman, James McHugh and Michael Naylor; and the role of the Young Girl will be shared by Esma Akar, Livia Court and Sicily Rose De Bernardini will share the role of Young Girl.
Olivier Award-winner Harriet Walter plays the formidable matriarch, guarding her reputation against the rising tide of her family’s desires in this pitch-black drama exploring the consequences of oppressing women.
Following Olivier Award-winning revivals of Cabaret in the West End, and A Streetcar Named Desire and Romeo and Juliet at the Almeida, Rebecca Frecknall is making her directorial debut at the National Theatre with The House of Bernarda Alba.
Composer Isobel Waller-Bridge has written an original score for the production, and the creative team also includes Merle Hensel (Set and Costume Designer), Lee Curran (Lighting Designer), Peter Rice (Sound Designer), Alastair Coomer CDG (Casting), Naomi Downham (Casting) and Lilac Yosiphon (staff director).
The House of Bernarda Alba is a co-production with Playful Productions, and is hotly tipped for a West End transfer.
The production runs from 16 November 2023 to 6 January 2024.
Currently playing at the National Theatre is a revival of Lucy Prebble’s drama The Effect until 7 October 2023, starring Paapa Essiedu and Taylor Russell; and The Father and the Assassin, until 14 October 2023.
The National Theatre’s West End transfers over the next few months include the touring production of The Ocean at the End of the Lane, which is coming to the Noel Coward Theatre from 11 October to 25 November 2023; hit Jack Thorne drama The Motive and the Cue, which is coming to the Noel Coward Theatre from 9 December 2023 to 23 March 2024 starring Mark Gatiss, Tuppence Middleton, and Johnny Flynn; and new British musical Standing at the Sky’s Edge, playing the Gillian Lynne Theatre from 8 February to 3 August 2024.
