Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends live cast recording announced

A live casting recording of Stephen Sondheim tribute concert Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends has been announced.

The news came from the official social media accounts of the show, on the day of Stephen Sondheim’s birthday, 22 March.

There is currently no news on release date, but cover artwork for the soundtrack has been released.

Devised and produced by Cameron Mackintosh, the tribute concert was held on 3 May 2022 at the Sondheim Theatre in London, following the death of Stephen Sondheim on 26 November 2021 aged 91.

Staged by Matthew Bourne, Maria Friedman and Stephen Mear, and conducted by Alfonso Casado Trigo, the all-star cast included Michael Ball, Helena Bonham Carter, Rob Brydon, Petula Clark, Anna-Jane Casey, Rosalie Craig, Janie Dee, Judi Dench, Daniel Evans, Maria Friedman, Haydn Gwynne, Bonnie Langford, Damian Lewis, Julia Mckenzie, Julian Ovenden, Bernadette Peters, Sian Phillips, Jon Robyns, Clive Rowe, Jenna Russell, Imelda Staunton, Charlie Stemp, Gary Wilmot and Michael D. Xavier.

Cameron Mackintosh is also bringing an actual tribute show to the West End later this year, with Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends getting a full run at the Gielgud Theatre.

The show will star Broadway legend Bernadette Peters, with Lea Salonga (Miss Saigon), Christine Allado (Hamilton), Janie Dee (Follies), Bonnie Langford (Anything Goes), Jeremy Secomb (Sweeney Todd), Beatrice Penny-Touré (The Phantom of the Opera), Joanna Riding (Follies) and Jac Yarrow (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat).

It will play the Gielgud from 16 September 2023 for a 16 week run to 6 January 2024, with Matthew Bourne directing, alongside Julia McKenzie, and choreography by Stephen Mear.
