Welcome to our microsite celebrating this year’s Olivier Awards, held at the Royal Opera House on Sunday 15 April 2012.
The annual awards, which are organised by the Society of London Theatre, are the most popular and important in the British theatre calendar. Last year’s Awards had a major overhaul, with MasterCard sponsoring the event and a glitzy ceremony held at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane.
Now in their 36th year, 2012 saw the awards develop even further, with MasterCard returning as headline sponsors and a glittering ceremony held at the Royal Opera House in London.
Also new for 2012, a live relay of the show was broadcast to New York, where an invited audience of British stars on Broadway celebrated the awards.
The awards were once again hosted by much-loved theatre stars Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton, who are starring in Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd at the Adelphi Theatre in the West End.
The BBC covered the awards, including the red carpet arrivals hosted by Anneka Rice, and the ceremony, broadcast on TV via the Red Button, and on BBC Radio 2 and online.
